I enjoyed your discussion more than I liked the film. It’s interesting to see an older, world-weary Indy but ultimately I have to vote thumbs down. For me, the film looks muddy, is overlong, the supporting characters are weak, & I think it was a mistake to open with an extended sequence featuring a “deaged” Harrison Ford. The elegiac tone to these recent performances was more depressing than anything for me. Ultimately, it was a fine way to pass an afternoon, but I probably won’t view it again.
Perhaps I’m in the minority, but I would have preferred Ford not have returned to his signature roles of Indy, Deckard, & Han Solo in recent years. Some things are best left in the past.
Finally, I’m confident that this is not the final Indiana Jones film. If we can have multiple Batmen, Supermen, Spideys, Bonds, and Kirk & Spocks, I can’t imagine that Disney will leave the property of Indiana Jones in mothballs. The Mouse House seems intent on recycling every IP that’s available.
I wish this had been a more positive post.
Since the bulk of your discussion was about the new movie and the whole Indiana Jones franchise, I’ll just say that with the exception of a few issues of the Marvel comics series, I’m not really a big fan any post-Raiders Indy content in any media: that’s right, not the biggest fan of any of the follow-up movies nor the ‘Young Indy’ TV series or anything else. Given what made the first movie so much fun, including its excellent last scene, I think everything made after that should have basically been the adventures of Indy and Marion.
As to the main topic of the show, i.e., the comics adaptation of Raiders, I really enjoyed the discussion. I had the complete series back then and I liked it well enough, although I think I enjoyed the art more than anything else – the Buscema/Janson combination on the art was indeed really effective. I agree that the way the dialogue was written seemed off at times and lacked much of the film’s charm and humor, so I tend to agree with Rob that perhaps Simonson was working off of a preliminary script.
You know when you listen to a podcast and feel seen? That was this! Like Rob, I felt the main problem with KOTCS was that Spielberg seems to have forgotten how to make an Indiana Jones film. Having liked James Mangold’s films, I welcomed a fresh eye.
I enjoyed the movie until the last 30 minutes when I was on the edge of my seat! Like Rob, I couldn’t believe they’d done it but, more importantly, how the hell would they get out of it? I loved how the message of time was woven through the film until it became literally what the film was about. Like Star Trek II, it approached the aging of the character and dealt with it head on. This was a great listen and Henry was a great guest.
Marion was spoiled for me as well but that was my own fault for listening to the score before seeing the film.
I also agree about Star Wars. I liked The Last Jedi for taking a big swing but overall I’d sacrifice it for a sequel trilogy that made any damn sense.

Before I had the Marvel Super Special Edition of Raiders of the Lost Ark, I had the Mad Magazine issue that parodied the film. For several months that was how I relived the excitement of the film.
I truly miss comic book adaptations and novelizations of films. As Rob pointed out, they were mostly adapted from early scripts so the offered extended and alternate scenes that expanded the story.
Indiana Jones was that last great adventure hero of my youth. The last character I imagined having adventures with. For this reason he’ll always have a special place in my heart.
One question before I wrap this comment up. Are The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles no longer considered canon? Because that series established that Indy lived into his 90s.

Well, he’s still alive at the end of Dial, so I don’t think there’s any contradiction.
That’s what I was saying. I’m sure when they made Young Indiana Jones in the 90s, they assumed there wouldn’t be any more movies. Do they n several episodes they show an eye-patch wearing 90 year old Indiana Jones in numerous episodes. So, unless the decide Young Indiana Jones is no longer canon, we know Indy survived into the 1990s. Drinking from The Holy Grail probably granted him longevity. (Of course… he may have time travelled to get there…)

I’ll be honest, Rob. I skip the opening sequence because it gives me a feeling of nostalgia that’s almost painful. That style of ad reminds me of the brief time that when we went on a tour of the U.S. in my pre-teen years, and I was stunned by the TV, advertising, and culture of the U.S. that we had only gotten in small bits from the 3 channels we had at the time in the Philippines, and later through the BetaMax & VHS piracy of shows. But it makes me curious about that time of my youth where I, like you, would also lose myself in comics (not just the story, but also the genuine U.S. ads — that apparently weren’t necessarily all true).

Thrilled to this comic book review because I was able to expose my son to Raiders. The art reminds me of some of the Star Wars adaptations as well! A friend of mine (when I went to school in the U.S.) was a big Indy fan, buying comics and the RPG and other things like posters. Happy to hear the new movie gets a thumbs up!

Mrs. Negentropy and I saw the Dial of Destiny last night on a date. I agree with Dell Dracula’s review. I will add that it was a little like Last Blood, in that the lead character becomes more real than ever in the final chapter, and thus the movie is maybe more powerful than any of its predecessors. They called back to the things that needed to be called back to. The arcs that some characters had were plausible. That impressed me, because an hour into the movie, I wouldn’t have expected them to be. My opinions of certain characters were pretty set. Some points seemed like they were speaking to me in particular, like a weirdly salient sermon. Maybe that’s just good film-making, or maybe I’m closer to eighty years old than I thought. But my wife caught them, also, for whatever that’s worse. As with Guardians, Volume 3, I’ll be thinking about this film for a while after seeing it. I strongly recommend it.
Great show, Rob and Henry! Always good to have a Henry on to discuss Indiana Jones. I had the old Marvel Super Special magazine version of Raiders and absolutely read it to shreds. Growing up I was definitely a bigger Indiana Jones fan than a Han Solo fan. Just the coolest action hero ever. During the winter, the hilly street I grew up on in Lancaster, PA would snow over and we would all go sledding down the hill. Of course you had to veer hard right at the bottom of the hill or you’d slam into Mr. Gershwint’s truck, but I digress. Anyway, we used to race down the hill. I would try to jump from my toboggan and grab the back end of the other kid’s sled as I slid down on my stomach like Indy does during the truck scene. It was so much much fun, just humming the John Williams theme, trying to yank your opponent off his sled as your coat filled up with snow. It wasn’t quite as dangerous as it seems, but, it wasn’t the safest thing either. And that’s how we entertained ourselves.

This was a fantastic episode, gentlemen! Just listening to you two talk about this one comic in particular and the movies in general gave me that same feeling I had when watching Raiders for the first time. It was such a fun thrill-ride of a movie that I couldn’t turn away BUT, for me, I would say Crusade is the better movie over Raiders. But that’s like saying this genius piece of art is slightly better than that genius work of art. They’re both great!
For Dial of Destiny, without putting any spoilers here, I would agree with Rob and say it’s the 4th (or perhaps tied for 3rd) best Indiana Jones movie, but I feel like that’s saying it was bad when I don’t think it is at all. It’s a good movie and had some fun moments, but it doesn’t capture that awe that I got from Raiders and Crusade. And, of course the message of time in this movie hits closer to home the older I get…….
As for the Raiders comic in particular, I never got the movie adaption as a kid but I did manage to snag a run of issues #1-8 of The Further Adventures of Indiana Jones from my local comic store after hearing Rob and Dr.Anj talk about them awhile ago (2 years ago? 3 years ago? Jeez, FW Presents from March 2018!) and, to me, this is the perfect way to continue the adventures. While movies are fun, I feel like returning Jones to his roots in the pulp magazines is where these further adventures really shine. That and the novels that came out in the ’90’s/2000’s. These are great tales that capture all the pulp-y goodness of what Indiana Jones was based on and you can have an unlimited FX budget and actors who don’t age.

The art looks great . I can imagine finding this comic as kid must bin super excited especially if fan of Indiana Jones . That reminds have read the Star Wars story where Han is dead and India meets chewie ? I forget what the comic is . I think like a Star Wars what if . Type deal .
Has any one played the app game 80’s mania wrestling I ask because of a character based on indie named Arizona Chance who uses a finisher called the last crusade a running close line.
I have to say both my wife and I were disappointed Indy didn’t get to stay in the past.
