  1. BTW, totally random factoid: On the newest episode of Ken Levine’s podcast, he tells stories of insane casting choices suggested by TV networks and movie studios. Apparently after reading the Cheers pilot, one NBC exec offered a can’t miss person to play Carla: Tony Tennille, from Captain and Tennille.

    WTF.

  2. Rob is excited about Dick. That’s because Dan Hedaya did play Nixon in that 1999 comedy. Not too bad a watch and an all-star cast for a comedy. Dan also played Nixon’s longtime friend and aide Trini Cordoza in the 1995 Oliver Stone film “Nixon”.

  3. Big fan of Dan Hedaya, he’s great and you polished his shoes just right. Best Hedaya roles (aside from Cheers):
    Julian Marty in Blood Simple
Mr. Waturi in Joe versus the Volcano (“I know he can get the job, but can he DO the job?”)
Mel Horowitz in Clueless (I think he’s kind of sweet, which is not something I’d say of most of his work)
    Arius in Commando

Plus, the man has been in Fantastic Beasts, Gotham, every cop show ever, Mulholland Dr… In a way, he’s wasted as one of the aliens in Buckaroo Banzai, but I’m still happy it’s on his filmography.

  4. Hi guys. I liked the discussion of Sam and Carla’s kiss. What I like about it in the story is that it precludes any future possibility of Sam and Carla having a romantic relationship. Carla plays and flirts from time to time, but the question has already been answered. What I like about the kiss as it was performed by the actors goes to something I remember you guys saying in an early podcast about Sam: that he wants to make people feel good. I think he adores Carla and wants her to feel better. He’s still smiling about it when Diane comes in.

I also enjoyed *two* comparisons to horror movies, particularly the one about Sam and Diane’s relationship as similar to waiting for the guy with the ax to come out. Also the Moby Dick connections—very classic.

  5. I always thought Dan Hedaya was aiming for a Neanderthal with his Nick Tortelli. The hunch. The body hair. His “eeeeeh” sound like it’s hard for him to speak. He’s a full-on caveman, and it’s perfect.

The only other character I can think of that’s mentioned before seen is one that hasn’t been mentioned yet. Cliff’s mom. I don’t think we’ve had the reveal that Cliff still lives with his mom. “I have my own room! I have my own hot plate! You got a problem with that?!” In my opinion, the casting of mom was excellent.

Another great podcast on a great episode!
