  1. Great episode. One of my top three for this season. I really think this is the episode where Frazier starts to become the character that we grew to love over the next next twenty years.

  2. You guys didn’t think that Sam orchestrated that last exchange to release Diane from her hang-ups? Like fun is fun, but then fine, let’s help her and Frasier (while still teasing Frase for one last scare).

I kind of read it that way perhaps to escape my big problem with the episode, namely the cruelty. I could not STAND the subplot about Carla’s gifts – and we have to commend Pearlman for making Carla so touching – and how, whether it was in character or not (Diane and Frasier, really?) or made sense or not (did Cliff not understand the task?!), people were being cruel to her. In the A-plot, Sam calls a dog Diane, refuses to give Frasier back his dog (which is why I say this is part of a scheme, why would you do that to anyone?). There’s just so much cruelty on show… For me, this was one of the weakest episodes you’ve yet covered.

  3. In typical Cheers fashion, Pavlov/Diane the dog is never heard of again. And Frasier himself never gets another dog, until his own show where he never gets along with Eddie. It’s not a criticism, it’s just typical sitcom wackiness that tickles me.

But oh my gosh! Sick Diane! “The voice!” Such a fantastic performance by Shelley! And that’s my totally unbiased opinion. Yup! Uh-huh! Yeppers!

I’ve never been a fan of pranks, practical jokes, candid camera stunts, or the like. I feel too bad for the victim. The gifts themselves were funny, but the context of playing pranks on Carla doesn’t sit well. And didn’t we just have Norm’s birthday story? Why does Carla get singled out for gag gifts? If this was a bar tradition to get each other gag gifts, it would have sat better. I’m just conflicted.

So great to have Marlene back on the show! Please come back for more!
