  1. Thanks to Rob for putting the scenes with Sam’s story into perspective so well. The awkwardness and embarrassment didn’t lead to “joke” laughs. The closest was uncomfortable nervous tension “this is quiet and going on too long” laughs. Which builds and builds into Sam’s explosion at the end, releasing all of that tension, just as much for the audience as for Sam.

Now, I don’t like Sam basically yelling at Diane for a minute about something that was not her fault in any way. But I love that Diane knows Sam needs to vent his anger at himself, and while she doesn’t want to serve that purpose, once it happens, she just lets him get it out. I wouldn’t call it a maturity in their relationship, but perhaps shows they’ve reached an understanding that Sam doesn’t have with his other friends. Their brief “thank you/any time” is pretty great.

    Another great episode!

  2. Red Sox pitcher Jim Lonborg was one the key members of the 1967 “Impossible Dream” Red Sox, champions of the American League. He won the Cy Young award that year. My drummer has an autographed photo of him in the practice space. Longborg is greatly admired, as a pitcher and a dentist, in the Greater Boston area. I don’t think he’s had to pay for a drink for 54 years!
