  1. “I’m not as old as Rob, though.” I’ve had you on my shows, Tom. JESUS!

This has always been a favorite episode of mine. Not only is it funny, but it allows for the melancholy ending. Some sitcoms when they tried to do capital D “Drama” fell on their face, but Cheers earned it.

Having had a hernia operation this year, I will admit for a brief moment I did feel similarly melancholy about having what is considered an “old man” health issue. But then I learned that isn’t really accurate, so I got over that. I did not hit on anyone while I was in the hospital, however.

  2. You referenced the episode “A Stork Brings a Crane” noting another appearance of the barbershop quartet but couldn’t remember the context. It was the episode where Cheers was celebrating 100 years in business and Rebecca wanted to have a “turn of the century” theme. Hence the barbershop quartet. Great episode. Lots of great lines…

  3. I’m older now than Ted Danson was for this episode. Sigh.

Past glories and getting older is a recurring theme for Sam. Don Juan Is Hell from this very season touches on this, and has some very solemn moments, where Diane herself wrote “as his looks fade, his despair will only grow, dying alone. (sic)” It’s an interesting angle for the leading man to face. Great stuff!

Woody’s playful butt slap and Sam’s pained reaction: just hilarious!

  4. I love when Cheers gets poignant with its endings. This is a nice beat on the series-long run of Sam facing his ever growing realization that his lifestyle isn’t going to be as satisfying ultimately as he wants it to be.

And yes, that nurse should be fired.
