I think the Frasier/Lilith-centric episodes are among the strongest, at least in Seasons 5 and 6 so far. This episode is not quite at the same level as last season’s Dinner at Eightish, but it’s definitely a strong episode. I think a Frasier/Lilith spinoff at this point set in their Boston home could have succeeded given how strong the two actors are, but I’m glad they stayed on Cheers.
I don’t quite buy that Frasier is naive enough to be so easily fooled by Norm and Cliff. Nor do I know how Cliff suddenly has so much confidence in how he interacts with a beautiful woman like Rebecca, given how afraid he usually is of women, but it’s funny.
And it’s interesting to see the Frasier/Lilith/Rebecca entanglement here, given that we’ll see these three characters caught up in a much different awkward romantic situation again near the end of the series.
There is some quality trolling in this episode. Not just at Frasier’s expense, but at Rebecca’s too.
The line “Yes I read the letter you licentious quack! And what facile tripe it is. ‘We both need time to grow. To develop as people.’ Who is the slut?!” was burned into my brain when I first saw this as a kid and remains one of my favourite Lilith moments. I love the rare times she got to be especially passionate.
Also I love any time Frasier is caught in a lie and how he covers for it “(Well so was I!”). Kelsey plays that so well and will continue to on “Frasier”
