Dear Reader 03: Space Ghosts

Finally! An episode on books! I examine and review Brightly Burning by Alexa Donne (2018) and Mrs. Rochester's Ghost by Lindsay Marcott (2021). Are these re-imaginings "successful"? How do they fare on my Jane Eyre rubric? Do I deem them worthy of the classification of "literature"? Tune in and find out!

  1. I’m sorry there’s only been one message here, but that’s because I was busy that week and the episode scrolled off my thingy. Will rectify soon and come back.

  2. Halfway through and just past your introduction to an adaptation you evidently hated (so I expect to be entertained by your exasperation – I’m just that kind of voyeur). As for the sci-fi take on Jane Eyre, I don’t have much use for the Young Adult format, though I’ve probably read a lot of it back when I was a kid and there wasn’t a name for it. So I don’t have much use for it anymore is probably the better statement.

I’m surprised to hear you say Jane Eyre is a disliked work. I thought it was quite popular. (Wuthering Heights is the one I keep hearing people trash.) On the question of what “favorite book” should be considered untouchable in the way you suggest (nothing it truly untouchable, but adaptation should come with a certain respect), I agree that it should be one of the great works as opposed to a 50 Shades (itself an adaptation of the equally trashy Twilight).

My own writing includes a number of short stories that reference literary works and concerns. One day, I’ll write you a Jane Eyre story that you can destroy publicly if you like.

  3. Count this as a vote for the diary format. I quite liked how it got us through a difficult book.

Oh, and feel free to call me he/him, though I appreciate you allowing for my potential fluidity.
