  1. So glad to hear you guys discuss this one! I’ve loved it since I caught it on TCM and immediately rushed out and got the CD and DVD. It can be a tough sell to some who don’t like foreign films (subtitles) or musicals, but it’s worth every moment. The ending is sad but very French where an outwardly innocuous moment is filled with great meaning.

FYI: The main theme (which was Oscar-nominated) was translated into English and covered by many in both vocal and instrumental versions. Here’s Sinatra’s take:

Thanks for covering another great musical!

  2. Call me a ludite if you will, but if you combine foreign films and musicals, then you’re probably going to have a pretty hard time convincing me to watch it. Having said that, if Rob and Luke are excited about it, I’m willing to listen, and this movie sounds like a bittersweet slice of life that may even get this neanderthal to give it a shot if it comes on TCM again anytime soon. Having Siskel and Ebert rave about it at the end certainly didn’t hurt either. 😉

    1. I probably would not have picked this movie for the show without the connection to La La Land, even though it’s been something I’ve been wanting to see for a long time. But no judgments here, I don’t expect everyone (or anyone really) to go see stuff just because I recommend it!

  3. La-La Land director Damien Chazelle was a guest programmer on TCM last month and showcased the following films favorites/influences:|

    City Lights (1931)
Meet Me in St. Louis (1944)
    It’s Always Fair Weather (1955)
    Umbrellas of Cherbourg

I’m sure TCM will run “Umbrellas” again in the near future if Chazelle nabs the Oscar.

  4. Another enjoyable discussion about a movie that just was not on my radar. Thank you. I also really like this idea of exploring classic or forgotten films that have inspired more recent productions. I wouldn’t mind hearing this kind of “double feature” as a semi-regular spot on the podcast.

  5. So okay. I’m about to start a new movie-watching project (details on the Blog of Geekery Monday), which has me trying to see 50 films I really want to see but somehow haven’t yet. Because of you, I had to switch one out for Les parapluies de Cherbourg. I guess I’m thanking you, not cursing your name.

  6. I listened to this by accident. I hadn’t intended to listen, but it was in my feed and it started playing and I started listening and I enjoyed it! I have not seen “Umbrellas,” nor have I seen “La La Land.” However I do enjoy reading film reviews and thoughtful analyses. There is one thing that I would like to contribute. Rob made the connection between these two films because the one was a direct influence upon the other. Director Chazelle makes no secret about it. In fact the title of his first film, which began as his college thesis project, is “Guy and Madeline On A Park Bench.” I haven’t seen that either. But now that I’ve heard this podcast, I know the significance of those names!
