  1. What a great episode. I enjoyed it so much I dug out (okay…redownloaded) the first Mego discussion Rob and Brian had all those years ago. Megos are one of thise things that I’m weirdly nostalgic for despite only coming in at the tail end of the lines. It’s not like Super Powers where I can be all ex-hippie about it. So there is no “I was there, man,” with Megos. I was born in 1976 so my time with Megos was brief but I still have fond memories.

It’s very appropriate that this episode comes out on Christmas as most of the Megos I had came to me at Christmas. I had all of the classics. Superman. Batman. Robin. The Hulk. I must had had fifteen Hulks. And I lost Batman and Robin’a gloves almost immediately but I still remember spending hours playing with them. I also had this Hulk playset that I have since found wasn’t Mego but made by this other company and sold through Sears. I wanted to buy one recently but didn’t have a spare kidney. I even had the Bo and Luke Duke Megos though I have no memory of ever asking for them. They were just under the tree in 1981.

Well that’s enough rambling. Great episode. Merry Christmas, Everyone!

    1. Ah, the Tara Hulk Hideaway playset with the cardboard Bruce (or David) Banner! I had that one too. Probably got it for Christmas 79 or 80. Lots of fun. I also had the four 8″ Dukes figures (including Daisy!), but I wanted them, because I was a big fan. Probably got them the same year.

  2. I have these dim memories of getting the Hulk playset when we were visiting my aunt for Christmas and then getting them Duke boys when we lived in southern New York state.

I have no idea why I remember that.

  3. I enjoyed this episode, even though my experience with Megos is pretty limited. I received a Mego Superman figure for my birthday or Christmas sometime in the late 70s. Two things stand out in my mind regarding that figure. First, I had my mom sew a small pocket to the inside of his cape. Using my child logic, I reasoned that Superman needed a place to keep his clothes when he changed from Clark Kent into the Man of Steel. Second, I had my mom make him a set of blue flannel pajamas, because it was clearly absurd to think that he would sleep in his costume. Did I mention that my mother was, and is, a saint? Now that I think of it, my Raggedy Andy doll and teddy bear had matching pajamas, as well. I must have been going through a phase.

I’ve always been more of a player with, rather than a collector of, toys. Though, I have put together a small Aquaman shrine of my own, over the years. Your enthusiastic discussion of Megos has inspired me to look for a Mego Aquaman. I wonder if my wife would whip him up a pair of pajamas?

This episode was a great companion to Episode 98. Congratulations on sticking with this long enough to be able to say, “a hundred episodes ago.” Please, keep them coming.

    1. I love the idea of you having a comic-accurate pocket sewn into your Superman cape! Plus, the PJs bit is just adorable. My parents were “customizing” my broken Megos for me as well, replacing capes, belts, joints, etc. with household items like denim patches, watch bands, and metal nuts and bolts!

If you are looking for a Mego Aquaman and don’t mind if it’s not vintage, Figures Toy Company has issued several reproductions of the 8″ Aquaman figure.

      1. Thanks for the tip, Chris, I’ll definitely give that site a look.

Your mention of nuts and bolts reminds me of the repairs my dad made to my old Star Wars figures. For some reason, I (or perhaps one of my younger brothers) had a tendency to snap their heads off, which my dad would reattach with screws. I still believe that the screw running through the top of Vader’s helmet just adds to his menace.
