FW Presents: 2019 at the Movies

oHOTmu or NOT's Siskoid and Nathalie go to the movies a lot, so they kind of have to podcast about it. Leading to their Top 10 films of the year, they take us through all the 2019 releases they saw in theaters (and a bit more besides). So get yourself some popped corn and sit back.

  1. All kidding aside, fun episode you two. I would also put PARASITE at the top of my 2019 list, alongside BOOKSMART, which I think will age into a classic.

I also agree re: Florence Pugh. I am still mixed on MIDSOMMAR, but she was great in it and my favorite part of LITTLE WOMEN. I can’t wait to see her in BLACK WIDOW in a few months—if she ends up as the new Widow now that Nat is dead, I’d be all for that.

    Very entertaining show.

  2. Top ten starting with…
    1. Avengers: Endgame

    2. Ready or Not (one of the best times I’ve had at the movies in a long time)

    3. Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers is one of my favorite characters and my love of Brie Larson deepens)

    4. The Kid (I love westerns, especially when the touch on actual events, and I enjoyed seeing Chris Pratt play the villain)

    5. The Dead Don’t Die

    6. Stuber (really funny, and a lot better than it had any right to be)

    7. Rambo: Last Blood (Stallone rides into the sunset on an ultra violent blaze of bad ass glory)

    8. Knives Out (reminded me of Death on the Nile, Evil Under the Sun, and many other great parlor room mysteries.)

    9. Zombieland: Doubletap. (I enjoyed hitting the zombie trail for a ten year reunion with this great cast of characters)

    10. Hobbs and Shaw (hehe…. cool! They blowed stuff up! Hehe… cool, they drive crazy… and Idris Elba was a total bad ass villain.)

Glass, Us, Ad Astra, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood were all films I had high hopes fir, but I thought they were all just OK.

Godzilla and Men in Black: International werent bad, but they were ultimately forgettable

Brightburn was the biggest disappointment of the year.

      1. You’re welcome. My biggest problem with Brightburn was there were absolutely no surprises. The trailer tells you everything you need to know. What if Superman was a “bad seed”. The story just goes from A to B to C from there.

  3. Fun show. I didn’t see nearly as many films as you two, and I thought I saw quite a few this year!

I think I know what you mean with Frozen. The impending development of dedicated Frozen lands in several non-US Disney parks is PROBABLY why the story swerved into a safe place right at the end. But we all really enjoyed that one. I felt it “grew up” a bit with the kids who were the target audience of the first Frozen.

    Chris

  4. I think about 5 movies in the theater this year. Go figure.

But no mention of a young Siskoid in Toy Story 4?

  5. Fun discussion! Now I got some more movies to check out that passed me by. I agree that trailers show way too much and I always avoid them. Also agree that Us sticks with you. “We… are… AMERICANS.” And that ending shot? Man oh man.

  6. Thank you for reminding me about a couple of movies I missed in the theater, but still want to watch, namely Battle Angel Alita and Godzilla: King of the Monsters. I also enjoyed learning about movies of which I was completely unaware. Finally, thank you both for biting the bullet and watching all of these movies for those of us who don’t have the time to do so ourselves.

  7. Thank you so much for this episode! As a person who likes movies but doesn’t get much time to see them, I really enjoy hearing your likes and dislikes and just the sheer amount of movies that came out this year. It really makes me want to see all the movies in both of your top tens bu, definitely the one I’ve been wanting to watch for awhile is Knives Out so it was great to hear a positive review of it.
Do you guys get to see many French-Canadian films where you are and are there any you would recommend? Being on the west coast, I think the last one I saw was Bon Cop, Bad Cop and that wasn’t really French-Canadian so much as it had a French Canadian in it.
    Keep up the great work!

    1. It’s one of my blind spots frankly (being French Canadian but not Quebecker means there’s a natural cultural tension that develops there). Bon Cop Bad Cop 2 is the better film is you at all enjoyed the first one, by the way.

But of course there are strong films out of Quebec (which owns the principal means of making films, we languor in documentary on this side of the line), anything by Arcand or Villeneuve or Dolan should be worthy of interest.

We have a franco film festival every year and try to see one film at least (didn’t happen this year), but otherwise there’s a cinema that sometimes shows something for a day or a weekend, but it’s not common nor frequent, despite our 40% franco population. If we’d seen any in theaters, it would have been on the podcast.
