Give Me Those Star Wars 42: TALES OF THE JEDI Parts 1 and 2

A long time ago, on a different Star Wars podcast.... Ryan Daly and Kyle Benning reviewed the first two issues of Dark Horse Comics' TALES OF THE JEDI, depicting the epic battle of valiant Jedi Knights and Dark Side sorcerers set 4000 years before the Skywalker Saga. For some reason, they never continued their coverage... until now.

Re-presenting a conversation that first aired in September 2015 on Dead Bothan Spies: A Star Wars Podcast, Ryan and Kyle cover "Ulic Qel-Droma and the Beast Wars of Onderon" from Tales of the Jedi #1 and #2. Then, the coverage continues with an all-new review of "The Saga of Nomi Sunrider" from TotJ issues #3 through #5. This is classic Expanded Universe content from the glory days of 1993.

  1. Interesting timing on this. I’m working on a thing that kinda compliments it for next week, unless we somehow get a Wandavision episode recorded before Monday.

  2. Very illuminating look at era with which I have no familiarity. My question to you, Ryan – is the technological stagnation a sticking point for SW fandom?

  3. I was a big fan of this series when it first came out, and like that it gives us a glimpse of the Jedi in a less rigidly structured phase of their existence. I imagine Jedi from this time period may even hold more varied views about the nature of the Force, which could explain why young Jedi study under multiple Masters.

I haven’t started into the High Republic yet, but would love it if the series captures a similar kind of feel.

    1. I forgot to mention that, while Tales of the Jedi now falls under the Star Wars Legends timeline, Onderon has survived into current continuity, as the home planet of Saw Gerrera. Onderon, the walled city of Iziz, and even the winged beasts are featured in several season 5 episodes of Clone Wars.

  4. Well done, Ryan and Kyle! This was a neat idea of revisiting the series and “finishing off” your review of the series in total.

I rarely got the Dark Horse Star Wars comics at the time minus the odd Tag and Bink one shots, for some reason. The discussed comics sound like lots of fun and makes me want to hunt them down.

I’m looking forward to your next show with the review of the first High Republic novel! Keep up the great work!
