Let’s Roll: GURPS Mars/Ice Age

Chapters 3 and 4 of Siskoid's GURPS Shftworld campaign feature GURPS Mars and GURPS Ice Age (yes, cavemen), which are similar in a number of ways. To discuss these games and their role-playing opportunities, he welcomes back to the show his players Daniel "Pout" Ouellet and Alexandre "Beb" Hébert. It's also a good avenue to talk about how a GameMaster can surprise his or her players. Ready to roll?

  1. Super fun as always, everyone! I’m really loving to hear how much character building you guys were doing in these GURPS games. Your characters and their personalities were so strong, it’s almost more fun to see how respond to all these different settings rather than stay in generic fantasy.

Siskoid, I can’t express how much I’m enjoying your Gamemaster’s tips. These tips are fantastic! Though, I mostly play with my kids (so they don’t mind, or even know, of the tropes), I’m really trying to implement some of your tips and, I think, my kids are reaping the benefits.

    Keep up the great work!

    1. And are still building. What’s interesting to me in picking the game back up is seeing how players might struggle trying to get the character back when they themselves have had over 15 years of evolution. Or not, in Beb’s case. I don’t think he’s changed at all despite producing a family etc.

        1. Fair point, but not that much. I had been GMing for about as long then as it’s been since we interrupted the game. I think the biggest adaptation has been having to play online, which cramps a number of key elements of my style.

  2. I really like the sound of these two sourcebooks, and how they provide mechanics that let you play across different genres. That sounds like it would increase their replayability, which is a nice feature.

Similar to Mike, I only GM for my wife and daughter, who are both new to role playing and don’t know the tropes. I will keep your tips in mind for future reference.

    Thanks for another excellent episode.
