As I rewatch MASH with this podcast, I’m coming to realize that I enjoy these episodes where the characters get to interact with the kids from the local orphanage. There’s so much joy in those scenes as our heroes get to forget, for a little while, that they are in the middle of a war.
As for my favorite scene from this episode, you used it for you stinger. That’s something else I’m learning to look for and enjoy this time around, namely scenes between Klinger and Father Mulcahy.

Plus, the Superman Minute podcast influenced my current Minute-By-Minute podcast. I had done several that went through movies one minute at a time. But, it was you and Rob expanding the parameters that started me on Pieces In Pieces: A Minute By Minute-ish Podcast covering J. P. Simon’s 1981 (or 2 or 3) slasher film PIECES. I go sequence by sequence, regardless of how long the sequence takes, rather than minute by minute. It’s fun and it was you guys breaking the mold that sent me that way.

The guest’s take on theme songs was…interesting.
Agreed on Trapper’s letter getting cut short. Hawkeye writes Dad three times and Trapper gets one he doesn’t even finish. Then they make Henry a sourpuss the whole time. No wonder they left.
Wow, Dan is probably the lowest-key guest you’ve ever had on. When he comes back, please ask him to amp up the enthusiasm just a tad! 😉
This was a fun one, even though it was all over the place. As soon as Trapper’s “Dear Becky…. ” started I was really angry that this wasn’t a Trapper episode. I would think that the inherent sadness of trying to sound chipper to your daughter while (not) describing death and destruction would have made a great episode.
A perfect guest for this episode of MASH, as Dan manages to go who-knows-where-next with his comments, much like the episodes scenes. So much fun to listen to. Thank you, Dan!
I really liked that director Alda was giving Trapper more to do, rather than Hawkeye. Maybe I’m reading too much into it, but it’s like Alda himself wanted to see Rogers get better stuff, and figured if he was behind the camera, that would be the excuse to make it happen. But I know diddly-squat about making TV shows, so I’m probably projecting too much.
But dang, the moment at the end of Trapper writing the letter kinda shook me. How he abruptly stops the record from playing, puts his pen and paper down, and just stares, trying to hold it together. Heartbreaking and powerful.
Then finishing with a picnic and games, which was glorious fun! I could watch that spoon relay race on a loop, it’s so delightful.
Such a great episode – you were both absolutely amped – great chemistry!! On a completely trivial sidenote, I was bummed you didn’t mention the ad hoc drum circle with Radar, Zale and the gang. For some reason, that’s one of my favorite parts of the episode. Like the rest of the picnic, as you pointed out, it seems so organic and real. It not only shows off Burghoff’s drumming skills, but as a kid (and young percussionist), that was the first time I got to see an improvised drumming collective, simple as it was. I was fascinated that, other than Radar, everyone’s part was very simple, but it all came together for a fun, rich sound. And Zale of all people got the “lead” with Radar providing the more complex texture underneath. It’s probably the best thing Haymer does in the entire series 😀 . I’m pretty sure that little scene got me hooked on doing drum circles. Just another way MASH turned me into a hippie. Thanks for a another great podcast!
Consider what is to come with Klinger’s story at the end of the shows run its funny the highly unintentional symmetry of having him be the one who says something to Frank about the politics and the “sex talk”
