  1. Thanks for another entertaining episode, gentlemen. When Rob mentioned that Hawkeye really committed to the Sherlock Holmes shtick with all of those props, it made me realize that Hawkeye probably had to get the hat, coat, and possibly even the cigarette from the black market, which means all of those items were likely (and ironically) stolen goods. Talk about some subtle layering of your message.

    1. I tried not to think too hard about how Hawkeye actually procured the items in war-torn Korea…but it does make you wonder. Either way, I loved the whole bit for it’s audacious silliness.

  2. Fun show! Hawkeye as Sherlock Holmes sounds like the series trying to shake off the usual sitcom shackles shows like this would eventually obliterate. That’s straight out of Gilligan’s Island. But I find stuff like that funny too, so don’t feel like you’re alone Sean!

  3. This was a favorite of mine when I was a kid. I was always into mysteries (thanks to Scooby-Doo) and it was a thrill when one of the sitcoms I watched would use the classic whodunit formula. This happens more often than you might think.

But on my second watch-through of M*A*S*H since Rob started this podcast I’ve noticed that my least favorite episodes in the first season…really the entire series…are those featuring Ho Jon. In retrospect it’s easy to see that his character should not have been ported over from the movie. After the pilot they seem to struggle with ways to use the large cast of secondary characters, but Ho Jon would not have been a problem if they’d just sent him to school in the States like they promised.

Despite that, with the references to Sherlock Holmes, The Thin Man and the great I Love a Mystery, this episode really warms this classic mystery fan’s heart.

So until the Rooster Crows at Midnight…Make Mine M*A*S*HCAST!

    Thanks,

  4. This is one of my absolute favorite episodes. One of the best examples of why I love seasons 1-3 so much.

Heh, “ill bootin’ gotty”. I still use that line.

  5. “Temperature’s Rising” was a hospital comedy that premiered on ABC during the 72-73 season. It starred Clevon Little and James Whitmore among others. They tried to make it a humorous Ben Casey. It didn’t do that well in the ratings but ABC thought they had a winner if they could tweek it a little. So the entire cast except Little was fired and a new cast was hired with the most famous member being Paul Lynde. They retitled the show “The NEW Temperature’s Rising”. The new program had broader humor and was a cross between M*A*S*H and a typical sitcom. The newly cast show lasted only 13 episodes.

So there’s your answer. The reason for the clumsy title is because they were hoping that adding the word NEW in the title they could get viewers to give it a second look.
