  1. Great episode about a great episode, fellas. I have vague memories of this one, so I think I’ll rectify that tonight.

Kevin continues to bring the knowledge. I had no idea about the Purple Hearts.

All this talk about Opie Taylor REALLY tempts me to finally launch Mayberry Cast on the network. No one steal that, just in case I do!

  2. Another enjoyable episode, gentlemen. I don’t have a lot to add to what you discussed, but I do want to second the opinion that this is the first episode to truly reveal the potential of the show.

Since you brought up Gomer Pyle USMC, I will add that my daughter has recently gotten into The Andy Griffith Show and Gomer Pyle USMC, and the episode she seems to talk about the most is Opie Joins the Marines. So, I think she’d be on board for a MASH/Mayberry shared universe.

  3. In my TV History course I have a lecture on the revolutionary sitcoms of the 1970s and focus on MASH, All in the Family, & Mary Tyler Moore. What’s remarkable is that only a few years before, CBS was airing Green Acres, Petticoat Junction, Gilligan, Beverly Hillbillies, & Mayberry RFD.

  4. Oddly enough, one observation was reminiscent of JLI. (Took me 17 episodes to make a cross-reference? I must be slipping.) This episode was funny, but carries an emotional gut punch. That’s something MASH and JLI share. They both bring the humor, but because of that, when they delve into the tragedy that comes with the territory, it carries even more weight and feels even stronger. Great job covering this tipping point for MASH, guys!

  5. Outstanding stuff here. Like you guys said, this isn’t my “favorite” episode in the series (though it’s in the top 5), it’s definitely the best episode, IMO. Henry’s line about the rules of war is one of the all-timers in TV history, and I tear up just a little every time I hear it.
