  1. This episode is judged kinda harshly, I think. The story is more like the capers and pranks from the beginning of Season 1, so I take is as being more of that style of show. It’s just rocky now that we’ve had the powerful examples of where the show is going. So it’s fine, this is just a goofing around story. Although I still dig the scene with Ginger, Hawkeye and Trapper. It’s too bad she waded away from the show.

And yes, the final bit was farce all the way. That much gold paint would have been pretty expensive! Radar must have done some real deal-making just for a gag.

Merry Christ-MASH! Looking forward to more in 2019!

  2. One of my least favorites from season 1. Many reasons but two major ones 1) Hawkeye and Trapper steal Henry’s gold filling thereby insuring that Henry will continue to be in pain with his tooth and 2) they had a bona fide incident that was going to free them of Frank Burns and they backed out. As we have seen in future episodes, replacement surgeons are relatively easy to get (Winchester, Dupree, Newsome, etc.) so to use the excuse that they might be “overworked” for a while seems extremely weak. This is the same problem I had with a Potter episode where a general wants Hawkeye for his private doctor. When Hawkeye talks his way out of it, Frank asks for a letter of recommendation and Potter, BJ and Hawkeye do everything they can to sabotage his letter of reference.

The closest the TV series came to the Sally Kellerman scene was the episode where Frank started playing practical jokes and Hawkeye eventually collapses the latrine while Frank is having a seat. They could have done something similar with Margaret if they wanted to reproduce a movie scene.
