You guys touched on my two favorite scenes from this episode, which are the two scenes between Ginger and Condon. The first one, where Condon is recovering in post-op makes me laugh every time I see it. The second one, where Condon gives Ginger a salute, is just so full of dignity and respect that it practically brings tears to my eyes. I particularly like the fact that we don’t learn exactly how much Condon’s views on race have changed, but we do know that he’s at least reached a point where he’s willing to take a second look at those beliefs.
I recently caught Season 10’s “The Tooth Shall Set You Free” on TV, which reminded me that MASH addressed the issue of racism several times over the course of its run. That’s another great episode that deals with a much subtler form of racism than what we see here from Sgt. Condon. Good stuff (referring to MASH not racism).
Listening to myself, I can tell I was a little nervous. I must have been, because after we recorded, I looked at my notes and realized I forgot to mention one thing and ask another.
First, actor Mills Watson has another connection to M*A*S*H. He was on an episode of The Interns which co-starred the man who knows of Rob’s existence, Mike Farrell.
As for my question…I assume Lorraine is filming Henry while he is doing his strongman routine. Then, either Lorraine or Henry films Sylvia (probably Henry). Lorraine takes over to film as Henry and Milt fight over Sylvia. Then…Lorraine joins them on camera. Who’s filming that?!? Molly?

This episode is a reminder of the missed opportunity keeping Ginger on the show. She brings some much-needed diversity to the cast, and Odessa was excellent in the role with very little screen time. Ah, well.

I really liked this episode. I agree with Tim that we should have kept Ginger as a character. If the producers didn’t want to keep Spearchucker, I think they could have gotten away with keeping Ginger. She did pop up from time to time, but never got as much screen time as she did here. Hell, I wish we had kept a steady roster of nurses. That was a HUGE missed opportunity to add depth to the supporting cast.
I do wonder why this episode wasn’t narrated by Trapper instead of by Hawkeye. He’s narrated THREE of these so far, and Trapper hasn’t gotten one! (Unless I’m forgetting it….?)
There was nothing specifically tied to Hawkeye in the story, so I wonder why the writers didn’t tell it from Trapper’s point of view. Things like that might have kept Wayne Rogers happier….

I agree keeping Ginger would have been nice. It seems the only times a black character had a feature role it was as a plot device.
A steady roster of actual nurses would have been nice instead of just random women as Able and Baker. Maybe three or four semi-regulars to get to know them instead of just Nurse Kelley.
