  1. I can see next year’s House of Franklin-Stein beginning with Johnny Oddball stumbling onto the grounds…

Martin, you did a fantastic job telling this tale. I don’t recall this one, although I have fond memories of looking through my ex-brother-in-law’s collection of Plop! He was a HUGE Aragones fan, owning every appearance of Groo, and all of Plop, and many of DC’s other horror titles Aragones contributed to.

According to a recent Back Issue interview with Bob Rozakis, Plop! was the best selling title on DC’s short-lived Comicmobile. Think of an ice cream truck…but with comics!

I personally think the ending of the story actually works pretty well, because the idea of frogs in wheelchairs is pretty out there anyhow. Having already crossed the rubicon into absurd, why not go all the way?

I have had frog legs, on occasion. Each time, I feel kind of guilty because…well…The Muppet Movie. Charles Durning was chasing Kermit across the country just to add his frog legs to his restaurant chain! They taste like chicken. No fooling.

    Great show!

    Chris

  2. I’m glad I didn’t listen to this one over my lunch break.

It’s funny that I tend to think of gluttony as one of the more benign of the Seven Deadly Sins, but seeing it play out like this really drives home how horrible it can be. Speaking of horror, I’m trying to decide if all of Cain’s narration on page 4 enhances the feeling of impending doom, or kills it. I wonder if it would have been better to simply let the art speak for itself in the buildup to the splash page.

  3. I can’t pinpoint one thing that flipped me to being a vegetarian, though stories like this were assuredly part of it.

I think in the early days, DC marketed PLOP! as “Weird Horror” and would run it in ads alongside HOF, HOS, etc. I think as the book got sillier and less horror-y it became more of a generic humor mag. But it must have remained pretty beloved among the staff, DC devoted TWO whole digest collections to reprinting PLOP! stories, long after the book had been cancelled.

Always great to hear Martin on a podcast!

  4. The concept is ridiculous … frogs with little wheelchairs, a man who becomes frog-like … but that’s what these horror comics were for. I love this.

That said, the creepiest thing about the episode was the way Mart said the line ‘Fresh! Fresh!!’ CREEEEE-PY.
