  1. Odin: I don’t know if I’d catergorize the Marvel Odin as a “good father”. He definitely seemed to slide into the “disapproving father” mode more often than not over the years. And that’s after he deemed Thor “worthy” to learn he was the real Thor, and not just Don Blake with the powers of Thor. Odin often changed personalities a bit depending on what role the story needed him to play. If he had to fight some world-ending threat, he was a great leader and a good father. If Thor was in love, he disapproved and was a real jerk.

Olympian Gods: This is really nerdy and nitpicky, but the group shot on the entry’s first page looks to be drawn by Jack Kirby. Kirby left the Thor title in 1970 with issue #179, and just drew covers later in the decade, no interiors. It sure looks like that’s Vesta sitting to the right of Zeus, but according to her entry, she didn’t debut until Thor #301, Nov. 1980. Someone goofed, me thinks!

Whose the Greek god of double-sided tape? I’m betting Venus.

    1. You’re right, that’s Vesta, so the first appearance must be wrong. OR it’s not Vesta at all (Hestia as she is called has a completely different look in Thor 301 going by a quick internet search). Anyone know where the revealing pic was sourced and could confirm?

  2. Is anyone surprised that I’d be wading in on this one? I sure hope not. OK, Asgardian Advisor hat on:

Let me start off by saying that Odin is NOT a role-model. His sole concerns are putting off Ragnarok for as long as possible and making sure that the Aesir (pronounced Ay-Zeer) are prepared when it does happen. He does this BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY (just look up Rindr to find out just how far he’ll go). While the Marvel version is less … problematic, he still has the same concerns and the same basic attitude. The reason that Thor is more worshiped by the Norse is that he’s the protector of Midgard (his mother being the Norse version of Gaea). The main three are Odin (more for his magic influence than anything), Thor, and Frey (who controls the sun and rain).

I’m pretty sure that the ladies might just change their minds to “Not” with a little more backstory.

BTW, the mother of Odin’s horse is Loki, so in Marvel Slepnir is Odin’s grandson. (And, yes, I meant to type “mother”.)

Also BTW, did you know that the English names for the days of the week are 6/7th Norse in origin. Odin, in his Germanic guise of Wotan, gives us Wednesday, or Wotan’s Day. (The others being Sunna’s Day/Sunday, Moni’s Day/Monday, Tyr’s Day/Tuesday, Thor’s Day/Thursday, and Frigga’s Day/Friday.)

As for the Olympians (I won’t rant on mixing the Greek & Roman names), if you’d like an interesting take on Hades and Persephone, and Persephone’s mother Hestia, I’d recommend Punderworld: https://www.webtoons.com/en/challenge/punderworld/list?title_no=312584 (Dr. Anj should like it just for the title. 😉 )

    1. I never knew about Sunna and Moni! I guess I always assumed “Sun” and “moon.” Tha k you, Gene! Now I have more gods to read about!

  3. Olympians: The story of Hestia/Vesta being the virgin goddess of the hearth goes back to a time when Poseidon (her brother) and Apollo (her nephew) both wanted to marry her. She found them both to be Not rather than Hot. So, she went to Zeus and swore an oath that she would remain a virgin and never marry. In honor of this, her priestesses, the Vestal Virgins, would take an oath of chastity. She also happens to be a favorite of my daughter, which is why I know a little bit about her.

  4. I hope this doesn’t come across as mean-spirited, but I really enjoyed all the confusion over all of Jack Kirby’s many pseudo-pantheons. If / when you get back to Who’s Who, I look forward to hearing the New Gods be the final straw that breaks their brains. As comic readers, we had the advantage of getting all this a little at a time — often over years. For the Hot Squad, it’s always a crash course.

Oh, and the Inhumans were a result of meddling by the alien imperialists known as the Kree. But I’m sure the Celestials had something to do with it anyway.

Regarding the comment on Athena: “The Greeks had it right. They need a level-headed woman in there when they go to war.” As a male veteran with many female comrades in arms, I endorse that wholeheartedly.

  5. Odin has the best hats of all comics.

Also Loki is clearly the favourite son. He tries to usurps his power, kill Thor and all around mess things up but he only gets a slap on the wrist so he can come back in a few issues. Meanwhile Thor keeps getting punished so he can learn humility or other similar punishments.

  6. Woo-hoo! Another trip into the Marvel Universe with the Hot Squad. What a great way to spend a boring work day than with the non-boring Hot Squad! (Sorry, that was a terrible compliment) I don’t really know these entries very well, but I certainly enjoyed the discussion.

Nuklo – I didn’t really learn anything new about Nuklo but did I learn a lot about bears? Does a bear only SOMETIMES poop in the woods?

Odin – I liked Thor more for Beta Ray Bill and Throg than I ever did for the Norse mythology (Sorry Gene!). Having said that, even I knew that Odin always seemed like a really bad father and so I never had time for him. A total Not for bad parenting!

I have no more questions about double sided tape. I’ve learned so much about it after the last two episodes that I feel like I’m done. This is where the “One to Grow On.” .gif and music would go.

Mike Dyonisus? Cheers! Like a good drink, the Squad mixes perfectly with anything else. Time for another Sangria Special!

All of you are super awesome and it makes my day when I see an episode drop. Well done! Keep up the great work!

  7. Late to the game – and more of a general comment rather than character based.

I love this show wholeheartedly. The chemistry the crew has, the banter, the side trips, and the comic discussions are just wonderful and always makes me laugh. At times, I need irreverence.

Now please forgive me as I still can’t really tell one voice from the other. But in this episode, someone comments how Hera is married to Zeus, thus he is her husband and brother. In the background, completely deadpan, someone says ‘shit happens’. I nearly spit out my coffee.

The rest of the show was great but that line and specifically the delivery made my day. I needed some laughter and irreverence and, as always, it was given.
