  1. Ah, more Norse stuff, so I have to comment. 🙂

Mistletoe isn’t like Kryptonite, where it weakens him just by being near it. He just isn’t invulnerable to it. After Frigga extracted the promise from everything (except mistletoe) that it wouldn’t harm Balder (who is her son in the lore), the gods made a game of throwing things at him to watch them bounce off. Hoder, being blind, couldn’t take part so Loki, seeing an opportunity to get revenge on the gods, created an arrow out of mistletoe and gave it to Hoder to shoot at Balder.

In the lore, this is what will trigger Ragnarok. In the comics, Odin put Balder in suspended animation and, even though Balder’s soul traveled to Hel, Ragnarok was averted. Walt Simonson, who designed the new costume seen in the entry, did some great stuff with Balder be effected by his trip to Hel and how much it took for him to get back to his old self.

That trip to Hel is what turned his hair white, by the way.

For more on Balder, I’d suggest checking out my Comic Book Retrospectives series of posts: http://www.thehammerstrikes.com/search/label/Comic%20Retrospectives

  2. Another top show, but boy, did I miss the listener feedback, that’s usually when the entertaining incredulity gets dialled up to 11.

Can we also name out favourites from the first issue now it’s done? I shall have the … Angel!

Only kidding, it has to be the Arabian Knight? Who doesn’t love a bare-cheated hero witht a flying rug and pantaloons?

  3. Fun show as always.

It seemed we were headed for an all-NOT show until Machete and Zaran pulled it out in the end. I wonder how Batroc feels being upstaged by his own brigade?

  4. I had some thoughtful comments planned for the characters in this episode. Then I heard: “I like to imagine they’re all running towards an ice-cream truck” and I lost every thought in my head for ten minutes. I’m sure everything before that was great as usual.

  5. I feel bad for Balder.
That page is like the shots we see in magazines of glamorous movie stars at their worst moments with tag lines like ‘they are just like us’.

I am pretty sure in the comic both Hela and Carnilla are both so smitten with him that they keep him trapped in their lairs like Circe did to Odysseus.

But instead of giving us the beefcake shot, Simonson gives us him in the most unwieldy, gaudy armor possible. Why hide the goods?

Anyways, terrific show as always. I’m still amazed at the Armadillo love. I suppose my fave would be the Asp.

  6. I feel really bad for Mordo because I think Siskoid should have pointed out that Chiwetel Ejiofor is playing him in the upcoming movie. Now I know that Ejiofor looks quite different, but Ant-Man was granted SO much good will because of Paul Rudd I feel like it’s an unfair handicap for Mordo to not even have a shot at a similar positive bias.

I’ve always loved Zemo’s look and I have no idea why. But seriously I love it all. The color, the lines on the mask and the gloves, even the fur. That said, I knew he never had a chance because of the inclusion of the picture of him without the mask.

    1. At the time of recording, I hadn’t realized (or remembered) that Ejiofor was playing him. We had some vague, hm who’s gonna play him?, didn’t check and it was just confusing to keep in the edit. Maybe it’ll come up again under other circumstances!

  7. The sentance that started: ” I want to put Machete’s face…” didn’t go where I thought it was going to.

  8. The regret in everyone’s voices when they saw Balder looking good on the cover was palpable. What are the rules? If, during the episode, someone is declared “Not Hot,” can that be changed if the cover reveals a hotness not inherent in the illustration within the issue? Or is the decision based solely on the interior info?

And, on a semi-related note, how come I get a bit sad whenever someone is declared “Not Hot?” I think I figure that everyone is Hot within their own house. It’s too bad some folks have to go outside and face our harsh reality. Every person is hot to someone. I hear Batroc yelling “My Mom says I look hot!” (Feel free to take that last sentence any way you want. He’s a bad guy. They’re weird.)
