For the line ‘ . . . invented his doom / first step was reaching the moon’ you have to take a step further back. It’s not an indictment on Nasa or the Moon program. But remember when this was written: early eighties, SALT talks, Arms reduction, when who had how many ICBMs was on everybody’s mind. Those ICBMs, each with enough warheads to take out a dozen cities in a blink, were built as a sister program, starting in the fifties, to the Mercury and Apollo programs. We got Von Braun from Germany after WWII before the Russians could snag him and we were able to use him both for good and for good defense. Ultimately, both programs were valuable and led to increased freedom around the world. Dylan’s point, I think, is that incredible technical advances sometimes come with a terrifying potential cost. Life is improved, but at the same time, the ability to snuff out life in an instant is developed in parallel. Dylan isn’t judging. He’s standing back as an artist, in his own genius way, and observing.
Hope that adds a little to your always brilliant conversations.
Regarding the opining about January 6th, no, factually you did NOT see video of people “walking into the Capitol and killing cops”. Because literally no cops were killed that day and the only person who was killed, Ashli Babbitt, was killed by Capitol police. So… not the best example.
