As I said in the Never Say Goodbye comments section Planet Waves holds a special place in my heart. As it was my first LP purchase I played the hell out of it and got to know it intimately so I’m always pleased when somebody chooses a Planet Waves song to talk about. And Hazel, simple as it is, is one of my favourites, that opening line, “Hazel, dirty blonde hair…” STILL gives me goosebumps.
PS Rob, please invite David back again, he was great. And thanks David for giving me a heads up on the Last Waltz video, I’ve just watched it….FANTASTIC!
Hi guys,
Great show! There’s another version of this song worth mentioning. It was rehearsed in New Haven on 17 September 1978. It’s a stunning version, beautifully sung and featuring two harmonica solos. What’s remarkable about this version is that there’s no sign of Hazel herself, having been replaced by someone called Angel, which sounds rathe prophetic considering the changes that were about to happen in Dylan’s life.
