  1. I adore this song. For me, it’s right up there with “Hurricane” in terms of narrative and evocative storytelling. But while the story of Rubin Carter is steeped in socio-political commentary (and true events), “Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts” feels like pure southern noir. It reminds me of BODY HEAT or other movies of that genre, except for the fact that the melody is too fast and whimsical. This song feels more nostalgic, while those movies are more cautionary tales.

Great episode! Brennan did a good job on his first appearance.

    1. Yes, I agree, the arrangement gives the whole thing a whimsical feel even though the song’s events are so dark and heavy. When I picture the movie that will never be made of this song, I think of something like Robert Altman’s McCABE AND MRS MILLER.

And I agree, Brennan was a great guest. He’ll be back!

  2. Yes, it’s about someone coming to town and creating chaos and leaving everything changed.
That would be Dylan, coming to NYC and leaving the music industry changed forever.
Bob is the Jack of Hearts.
