POD DYLAN
Episode 86 - Masters of War
Rob welcomes back Pod Dylan Five-Timer Jon Glyn to discuss two very different versions of the classic "Masters of War"--the 1963 original from THE FREEWHEELIN' BOB DYLAN, and the live performance from the 1991 GRAMMY AWARDS.

Nice!
Great listen guys, thanks. 1991 Bob was certainly an interesting version. Not my favorite period but this performance and speech were highlights and great that you revisited it. Could have only been topped in the confounding expectations stakes if he’d busted out Wiggle Wiggle!
Loved it. I wondered what the origin on the “riot” thing on the show was all about.
Yes, so did I. Glad to know the story!
I saw those 1991 shows (all of them) at Hammersmith Odeon in London just before he played that Grammy show. 1991 was somewhat ‘looser’ than the magnificent residency of 1990 at the same venue. I talked with JJ Jackson before he left for the States knowing they would be playing the Grammys and he knew they’d be playing Master of War so it clearly wasn’t a spur of the moment decision. Of course it was an obvious choice given the Gulf war was raging. Despite or maybe because of the ragged performance and wonderful speech I think this is still one of my favorite Dylan TV moments. Enjoying your podcasts greatly.
