About blowing up chickens and scorpions, this was something fairly prevalent in “cutting edge” cinema of the 70s, after studio reigns were loosed. There’s a similar scene in Jodorowski’s El Topo (a surreal Mexican Buddhist western of this era), also at the top of the movie.
