Tough Like a Girl #2 – Nimona

Second episode is here! So we guess this is officially a thing now and not just an idle musing or one time goof. This time around Lis and Nathaniel take a look at a collected web comic that’s a little bit fantasy, a little bit sci-fi and a little bit gleeful destruction from writer/artist Noelle Stevenson.

Our theme song was composed and performed by erica dreisbach, and you can find more of her work at her website right here. And our logo art is by Nic Buxom.

  1. Nimona was a delightful read. As you both noted, the characters are so interesting. It’s easy to give them the standard labels: bad guy, good guy, sidekick. But the book reveals a surprising depth and history, so they transcend fitting into a neat box.

    About Nimona’s body type:
    1. I love it.
    2. She’s so cunning, I almost believe she intentionally keeps a form to make people underestimate her. Maybe I’m giving the character too much credit, but again, that’s falling into the trap of underestimating her. Yet another angle of what makes this book so good.

If it wasn’t for the outright murderyness, I’d have shared it with my daughters by now. So I appreciate Lis’ take on appropriate age, so maybe it’s time to give it a try.

    Yeah, I love this show.

  2. Hey Liz and Nathaniel,
Great episode on what seems like an awesome comic. I found your discussion on shape shifting as it relates to outward persona particularly interesting. I can actually think of a couple more examples of this in other comic firstly there’s Frobisher a sixth doctor companion whose favorite shape shifting from just happens to be a talking penguin. A second is a Skrull character called Xavin from some of the later issues of runaways who is gender fluid in the most literal of senses (did I mention I was a fan of runaways).
    Anyway great episode great podcast!

  3. By the way Frobisher is also a private detective who speaks with a Brooklyn accent morphs himself a pair of black and white pants to protect his modesty.
