No Escape from Kurt Russell: The Fox and the Hound

Siskoid Cinema presents… No Escape from Kurt Russell, the show that explores the filmography of one of American cinema’s best leading men and tries to get a handle on his mystique. Why is it we’ll watch anything so long as Kurt Russell’s name is attached to the project? On this episode, Siskoid and Shotgun Godin discuss 1981’s The Fox and the Hound. A Disney animated film? Yeah, but Kurt Russell is in it!

  1. I saw this one theatrically, and had a Little Golden Book or similar. Maybe a Gold Key/Western comic, as well? I was never a big Disney kid, but it was the most resonant of their “classical” animated releases for me (having also seen Robin Hood, The Rescuers, Song of the South, Lady and the Tramp, The Sword in the Stone, The Aristocats, and The Black Cauldron, sometimes with accompanying print materials.) There was also TV and home media in the ’80s, but again, I was more Looney Tunes oriented. I caught some of the early renaissance pictures, favoring Little Mermaid, but retain the most affection for F&H. I think its overt Southern setting and characters hit closer to home than, say, Bambi, from which it borrows liberally. I really liked those character voices, and hey, they’re my generation (“The dishes are done, man.”) Like ya’ll, I did start to check out when the cute pups grew up and apart, but still appreciated the bittersweet resolution. Pearl Bailey was second only to Debbie Reynolds in Charlotte’s Web for comforting cartoon critters.

  2. I never knew this was a Kurt Russell movie! The only thing I remember from this movie was the like “I’m a hound dog” from the previews. My sister and I would briefly say this to each other.

I had heard the first Disney movie to use famous voices was The Jungle Book and there was a backlash as many of the personalities of the characters were defined by each of the famous voices. I think critics thought of it as “cheating”. The only character that comes to mind is the musician who did the voice of the orangutan and sang the song with the line “I wanna be like you-oo-oo”.
