  1. I love David’s cartoon voice impressions nearly as much as I love this show’s theme song.

Also, I think David referred to Green Lantern’s sidekick as “Tom Kaluta” when he meant Tom Kalmaku. Confusing him with artist Michael Kaluta, perhaps?

First of all, thank you for listening, Ryan. And yes… I conflated the two.

  2. Great show guys! IIRC I turned on Super Friends one day, expecting to find more Challenge, and got this run, which wasn’t bad, but…I wanted more Legion of Doom!

There really does need to be some comprehensive history of the Super Friends show, would love to know why the show changed formats so often. And like Shag, my heart skipped a beat when David mentioned a “Blackhawk TV SHOW”, when he meant movie serial.

    1. Thank you, Rob.

WORLD’S GREATEST SUPERFRIENDS is my favorite season of the show. These are the episodes (apart from The Fear and History of Doom) that had the greatest impact on me. I mean, I wouldn’t *mind* doing a Superfriends Supercast Podcast sorta thing… I love the show, as goofy as it can be.

Then again… I’m also always game to talk Bionic Six, Spider-Man & His Amazing Friends, Spider-Woman, Thundaar, Goldie Gold & Action Jack or Plastic Man.

      1. I strongly suspect I’m not the only one who’d welcome some podcasts on Spider-Man & His Amazing Friends. That series introduced me to the X-Men, of whom I’ve been a fan for about 40 years now. Even apart from the X-Men episodes, the series was great.

  3. As a fan of both Tolkien and the Super Friends, I really enjoyed your discussion of this episode, especially since I had forgotten that it existed.

As I listened, I realized that I had largely conflated The World’s Greatest Super Friends with Challenge of the Super Friends in my memory. Case in point, I recently bought and rewatched Challenge of the Super Friends on DVD, and, when I got to the end of the season, the first thing I thought was, “What happened to the Wizard of Oz episode?!”

Thanks to you, I now realize that many of my favorite Super Friends episodes (or at least the ones that most stick in my memory) are from World’s Greatest. I guess I know one gift that’s going on my birthday list this year.

  4. I loved everything about this episode. And the episode you covered! I love the WGSF season! And yes, Universe of Evil is my jam, but now I want to have David on any show I talk about that on,…and maybe Shag too.

Malhavoc made quite an impression on me too. He was legitimately threatening. SF’s version of Dracula was equally scary, but he had that weezy, asthmatic voice. Which was creepy, but undermined his menace somewhat.

I kept calling foul on all SF episodes following, when Batman’s cape WASN’T invulnerable to like..everything!

Thanks for the great show, gents!

    Chris

    1. Thank you, Chris. Been loving the Wonderful Toys, Supermates, JLU Cast, AND Power Record shows.

I have sooooooooo many great feels about this season of Superfriends, but Universe of Evil is easily in my top 3 from this season. (Evil Superman says ‘Great Satan!’ … there’s a devil on the Hall of Justice! I could go on!)

      1. YES!!! How’d they get away with that?!? We covered “Universe of Evil” WAYYY back on an early Super Mates, but I need to talk about it more! We also covered the Frankenstein one on SM.

And thank you David! High praise from a master!

        Chris

  5. I really loved the enthusiasm you guys have for this episode! I had long outgrown the cartoon by this point, it served its purpose as a gateway drug and I was buying plenty of comics! I would like to hear you discuss the other cartoons in this limited “literary” season. You obviously have vivid memories of them! Until I read the blurb above, I thought the villain’s name was Mal Havok, which is an awesome pseudonym! (In the Amalgam Universe, or the Super Team Family hosted by the talented Ross, Mal Havok is a mash-up of Teen Titan adjacent Mal Duncan and X-Men adjacent Alex (Havok) Summers.)
Upon reflection, Saturday morning days did not last long. In autumn of ’79, I was in 10th grade, so Saturday mornings were for marching band practice before the 1:00 football game. The previous five years I was delivering the Boston Globe every morning, and it took me a while. But, the years before that, I remember watching some cartoons that I believe didn’t last a full season! Clue Club, Hair Bear Bunch, Pebbles and Bamm Bamm…

  6. >> I would like to hear you discuss the other cartoons in this limited “literary” season. >>

I’m *always* game to talk about this season of Superfriends. With Chris or Shagg … it’s by far my favorite.

  7. >> I should have mentioned this on the show, but check out the new blog SUPER FRIENDS UNIVERSE from fellow Nuclear Sub, JT the Exterminator! >>

    WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!

    This is AMAZING!
