If Sulu had beaten Kirk in the first round, I would have refused to participate in the next Fire and Water potluck.
Seriously, I love me some Sulu (and Star Trek VI), but I was hoping to see Kirk advance beyond the first round. But when you put him up against Spock, I knew the actual human being factor of Nimoy vs. Shatner would sway the panel. And it did. I can’t be upset about Spock taking it all, but Kirk is still my hero, and in “real” Trek fiction, he would have figured out some way to beat everyone on this list. He does that before breakfast every day.
Great show though, and a lot of fun. I regret not filling out a bracket. I kept meaning to ask you about it, because I don’t “sport” despite living deep in NCAA basketball country (near the University of Kentucky and the frequent title champion Wildcats), so brackets just confuse my nerdly mind. Mine would have probably mirrored Rob’s. 😉

When I heard it looking like Sulu was winning, I thought Cindy Franklin had written some big checks to some podcasters…
For sure, Sulu and Scotty would have made it farther if Cindy had been involved!
Full disclosure up front, I have a well-known antipathy against Kirk.
I honestly can’t understand why everyone else loves him so much. To me, he’s the antithesis of a hero. He is the exemplar of someone constantly rewarded for bad behavior. This is not just someone who knows when a bad rule needs to be broken for the greater good. Rather, he breaks rules often without regard for whether or not it’s the right thing to do, on little basis for whether or not his “gut” tells him to do so. I’m very glad that some of the wider (if non-canonical) Trek fiction occasionally calls him to account for this (I especially cite the DC comics sequel to “The Apple” where Kirk is forced to admit at the end that his actions in the original episode were “very, very wrong.”), since the main canon is so consistently unwilling to do so.
All that said, it’s really no surprise that he beat Sulu, and I’ve already posted by arguments against that having been the first round pairing (as opposed to some other Original Series pairing like Kirk vs. Chekhov, for example) on Facebook (not that they were well-received there, either).
Ugh. I REALLY wish we could go back and edit these things after they post! Trying to do so in-text before hitting “Post” inevitably leaves errors. I honestly don’t know how most of you do it!

I think he’s fun, but I totally get where you’re coming from re: his story’s moral ambivalence. You’ve probably touched on why I prefer Sisko and DS9 in general.

I cannot argue with the final results, even though Dr. McCoy is by far my own personal favorite Star Trek character. Spock is perhaps one of the greatest and best realized characters in fiction, let along Trek. My favorite from STNG would have to be Picard, but I simply didn’t stick around long enough with any of the other series to date to have an informed choice for favorite. What I remember of the EMH, though, makes him a likely candidate. (I watched a handful of Voyager, sporadic episodes of DS9, and absolutely none of Enterprise or Discovery.)
RIker over Picard in the first round?!? What fresh hell is this?!! I invalidate this entire episode!! The panelists were clearly Mirror Universe doppelgängers!!
Maybe if you’d watched every Star Trek episode ever you could have been a panelists… You have ONE YEAR to brush up before the Villain Bracket!

Interesting. Though I think it should have been more than one episode to build up the suspense. Based on people’s summaries in round one, most of the rest are a foregone conclusion. If you’d changed some panelist in splitting the episode it could have added more drama.
I can’t say I agree with all the calls (Barkley should have kicked 7of9’s butt), but it was a lot of fun.
I’ve gotten so much grief for the episode, there’s no way I would have wanted to extend it for longer.
I guess I didn’t read the fine print or misunderstood the premise, because I filled out my bracket as if it really was a “fight.” So I of course had Scotty beating McCoy, for instance. Of course, McCoy is the better character. SO…..oops.
Also, it’s been so long since I saw Voyager that I forgot that EMH was the doctor! I would have picked him (it?) if I had remembered.
Still, happy that I got the final two right, and picked the eventual winner.

Great episode. All of the discussions and arguments over Trek’s best was quite… fascinating.
My final two would have been Spock and Data. I sadly underestimate Sisko. Shame on me!
