Gimme That Star Trek Ep.38: Epidemiology in Babel

In this episode of Gimme That Star Trek, Siskoid sits down with an epidemiologist to talk about the Deep Space Nine episode "Babel". Does the crew of DS9 deal with an outbreak of aphasia virus correctly? And just what do epidemiologists DO? And sure, yeah, the current coronavirus threat is discussed. So... topical!

  1. I’m simply flower units about this episode! And how timely given the virus scare going around.

Wasn’t there kind of retread of this on Voyager, only with cheese or something? I forget. Probably for the best…

    1. The cheese was infecting the ship systems, I think that was covered even LESS in Chalif’s training. Our other option for tracking a disease’s spread would have been The Naked Time/The Naked Now.

And yes, topical, but let it be known we first talked about doing this last summer, and our first (delayed) recording date was around Christmas when I don’t think it would have been much of an issue.

  2. A very (and informative) show. I love when the network does stuff like this.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard Siskoid laugh harder on a podcast than at the idea of Geordi having Cyclops-esque laser powers. Pew-pew!

  3. A great topic to bring to the show. I love trying to bring “real science” to the sci-fi. Sure, it doesn’t usually fit, but the fun is in the attempt. Thanks, guys!

  4. Interesting. Nicely done.

Sometimes it’s good to get a couple weeks behind and have to play catch-up. Interesting episode. I guess it could have been made more topical if it happened a couple weeks later, but I think your guest might be a little busy right now.

    1. Yes, he has been put on the actual COVID team, so he’s looking at 12+ hour days, 7 days a week. He might want to chat about his experience in a future segment, or he might just sleep for 6 months.
