  1. Nice Ep guys. Glad to see everyone is having a great time with the JLMay crossover. Its been great following it along and hearing everyone’s different and sometimes similar opinions. But was that totally awesome and totally justified shot at Ryan a breach of the BvS Accords??

  2. Aussies get access to the comments early, just like we got access to Civil War early. Boo yah!

Good call Chris on highlighting the contribution of Brian Augustyn, something I failed to do in my episode because I was distracted by the relationship between Flash and his junk.

Every part of JLMay has been terrific so far! Love you guys.

    1. Keep rubbin’ it in, Paul!

You guys did a great (and fun!) job with the body horror in your JLMay episode. Hey, when a man loses his junk, and sees it running around on a giant purple putty monster with a disembodied brain, that begs for discussion!

      Chris

  3. I don’t think I’ve ever heard that version of “Under Pressure” before. 😉

As Paul mentioned, good job giving Brian Augustyn his propers. I’m as guilty as anyone in overlooking his contributions to this and other series, and I ought to know better because I love me some GOTHAM BY GASLIGHT.

  4. I’ve been enjoying JL May; but, the promo with the Carpenters really brings back childhood horror. For many years, I was stuck listening to the radio station my parents favored, with things like Neil Sedaka and the Carpenters. Nothing was worse than a drizzly, grey day, with BJ Thomas’ “Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head” and the Carpenters’ “Rainy Days and Mondays Always Get me Down.”

I don’t have much of an opinion about Snapper Carr. He was long gone by the time I started reading JLA. What I have read, in subsequent years, of his time with the JLA doesn’t make me hate the guy; but, he’s no Rick Jones (and he had his ups and downs). I guess it was just one of those elements you accepted back then, like the goofy “hip” dialogue in Teen Titans (though that was gone by the time I read it), and Robin’s puns.

Ed Byrnes also turns up in Back to the Beach, which is another great film for jokey cameos by past stars and icons. The best is when Frankie Avalon has a surf off against the punk surfers and the MC is Mrs Cleaver, with Wally and The Beav doing a Siskel & Ebert impression. Well, that and Gilligan as a bartender who keeps trying to tell people about the island (“I knew a guy who could take two of these and build a nuclear reactor; but, he couldn’t fix a two-foot hole in a boat. Wanna hear about it?” “NO!!!”)

    1. ps. Ditto on Brian Augystyn. Gotham by Gaslight and Master of the Future are both excellent tales and I think he was a key component in that Waid Flash run.

    2. Wow, Back to the Beach. I’d completely forgotten that film. Always thought I was getting half the jokes & noticing half the cameos.

      1. When I first saw it, I didn’t know who Dick Dale was, other than that version of “Pipeline” he does, with Stevie Ray Vaughn, is awesome. I soon learned, which made the hair all the more wild.

    3. Ah Jeff! I thought we agreed on everything! But, The Carpenters broke our streak! I must say that I can listen to Karen Carpenter’s voice anytime, even on Rainy Days and Mondays 🙂

      1. Oh, I thought she had a great voice; but, a lot of their songs could be quite depressing. Her actual life behind the song didn’t help. Now, some of their other songs, like “Close to You,” are a different story. That one is pure beauty. I prefer the peppier stuff, like “Top of the World.”

I still recall seeing the movie, The Last Supper, which features the Shonen Knife version of “Top of the World” over the end credits. It was the first time I heard it and I burst out laughing as I was hearing these Japanese women singing a Carpenter’s song, in the 90s. Soon after, I stumbled on the album, If I Were a Carpenter, with 90s alternative acts covering Carpenters’ songs (as seen in the movie Juno). That was a really great album.

    1. Boston,

Is it working now? Looks okay on our end, although on my iTunes, it popped up under Rob’s Film & Water from this week in the main feed, for some reason.

  5. Two songs from the greatest band the world has ever known!

And great show, too. As to the logo bugaboo Chris pointed out, maybe Manhunter or Arthur saw fit to bring it back?

    1. Will do! I don’t have it on my phone yet, so I had to wait until I got home tonight. Following now!

      Chris

      1. Cheers big ears*

*this is a generalist sobrioquet and not a targeted comment on the size and/or shape of your ears which is unknown to me at this time.

  6. Just wanted to say, thanks for giving me a bit of a bright spot today. My cat, Mr Man had to be put to sleep, as his kidneys were failing. He was my “little buddy.” Listening to this episode did a lot to ease my mood today.

    1. Sorry to hear that Jeff. I know how rough that can be. Podcasts helped me get through the week we had to have our dog Bugga put down a few years back. Sorry for your loss, but glad we could brighten things up, even in the tiniest of ways.

      1. Thanks everybody. My girlfriend named him Mr Man, after her son’s favorite children’s book (from the Mr Man and Little Miss series). He was quite the character and he used to lie on the floor, with his forelegs stretched out in front of him, and his back legs spread behind him. He looked like he was dreaming he was Streaky the Supercat, or something. He was jet black, with a ton of personality and he looked like someone had shrunk down a panther. If it had been up to me, we would have called him T’Challa; but, I was overruled.

Even up to the end, he made us smile and laugh. While we were saying our goodbyes to him, before taking him to the vet, he was lying on the keyboard to my girlfriend’s laptop (a favorite spot for both of our cats). He shifted around a bit and clicked on a music file. The song was Blue Oyster Cult’s “Don’t Fear the Reaper.” We both laughed. I got this mental image of a longhaired black female cat (somewhat like our other cat), with an ankh hanging from her neck, who came to collect him. I pictured him trotting off with her, stopping and looking back, then heading off to the unknown. I also got an image of Death and the Death of Rats, from Terry Pratchett’s Discworld coming to collect him. After the vet had administered the drug and I was holding him in my arms, I whispered to him to say hello to Terry Pratchett for me.

  7. Another excellent episode of JL May. Great job Chris and Cindy. Nice coverage and fun discussion.

  8. Loving all of the JLMay podcasts – Chris and Cindy continue the great podcasts that have preceded this one. Wold have loved a continued retelling of the JLA origins in the post-crisis era, a JLA Year 2 in you will; I know they did something like that in JLA Incarnations but that was way too short a series for my liking and it spread a bit too much over the various eras. Very hard to say anything more as it has been a great series. Look forward to the final episodes.

  9. I enjoyed jla year one and your podcast. I loved BvsS. Let’s say I’m a little bit older than some you guys appear to be. I don’t have warm fuzzies for the Chris Reeves Superman. M of S was the movie I waited my whole life for. Ultimate edition BvsS was so enjoyable to me. Well, I’ve never posted much online in my life, I’m one more person who enjoys this fire and water site and all your shows. A few of youse guys are super specific of how’ your superman’ is supposed to be. I love golden, silver and postcrisis DC. Birthright. Golden Age by Robinson, All Star superman, Identity Crisis JLA. Martian Manhunter and Dr Fate are some of my faves. Thx for reading this.
