  1. The first I heard of the word chandelier was in Mad Magazine’s satire of this movie. Also, the points are all on the outside, Kal-El was on the inside, which was a closed sphere. No corners or points to touch there, but apparently nothing edible either.

  2. Zod, Ursa and Non getting sent to the Phantom Zone was one of those sequences that kind of baffled me as a kid. I understood that they were being sent to a prison but the whole process just confused the hell out of me. When I finally got to see Supergirl on home video that confusion was compounded by the famous, “How the hell does that work?” questioning of why Zod and crew floated around and space and Supergirl went right to this ugly, scary world where Peter O’Toole dies helping Kara escape. I never gave it too much thought but it was on my mind.

    So here’s my adult no-prize.

Argo City was the hippie commune of Krypton. Seriously. Watch the movie and tell me I’m wrong. Everyone is wearing these weird, non-reflective outfits and they’re creating art and all this kind of thing and there’s even this “dangerous” free thinker played by O’Toole who, if given time, probably would have been the Charles Manson/Jim Jones of the pocket city. So Zaltar gives Kara this weird thing that can animate sculptures and this leads to her leaving Argo City and Zaltar sends himself to the Phantom Zone.

Except it’s not the Phantom Zone as Jor-El knew it. The people of Argo had all this free time so Zaltar and probably Zor-El worked with the Phantom Zone technology and used the album covers of doom to actually send their criminals to this horrible dimension they discovered. This is the dimension that Selena discovers.

And that’s how it plays out in my head.

By the way, Zor-El was played by Simon Ward, who was also on The Tudors with Henry Cavill.

Speaking of fun Superman connections Chris mentioned that Susannah York was Mrs. Cratchit in the George C Scott A Christmas Carol. Bob Cratchit was played by David Warner, who was also Jor-El on an episode of LOIS AND CLARK: THE NEW ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN.

So Jor-El and Lara were Tiny Tim’s parents. No doubt they were working on a steam powered rocket ship to send him away if things got bad.

  3. Something I noticed while watching the 3-hour cut last night: the dome of the sentencing chamber closes as the Zod and Co. fly away in the “album cover of doom” (as Mr. Bailey put it above).

  4. This Phantom Zone was absolutely terrifying to me as a kid. And I agree, I think a lot of that comes from how the villains do such a sharp heel turn once they’re trapped inside, especially Ursa with all the “forgive meeeee!s.” Also, my brother and I had a ton of fun recreating scenes of Kal-El’s ship with our mom’s Christmas Moravian Star (pic for reference: http://bit.ly/2hBAG2d). Good times!
