  1. Wow, really going out with a bang: a double-feature episode with three times the usual amount of guests.
Enjoyed the conversations, gentlemen – and looking forward to, but also sad about, the final episode. (I kind of figured you’d conclude the show with that specific book…)

  2. question i gotta ask before its answered so everybody knows im a smarty. An alex ross JLA Treasury? That makes me wonder who’s his arcittypal jla? Sure we all think of the orginal 7 but when (most of us) were kids it was NEVER the original 7

  3. Let me be among the first to congratulate you on this wonderful podcast series. I guess all good things must come to an end, but I wish this series could continue forever. While listening to this penultimate episode, I was reminded on what brings me back to the Fire & Water network on nearly a daily basis: informative & entertaining pop culture conversations that don’t descend into negativity. I owe a great debt to you Rob, Shag, Chris, & all the other podcasters who contribute to all your various projects. Every so often I think it would be fun to have a podcast, but I couldn’t reach the high bar you’ve all set for so many years now. Your enthusiasm is infectious. It was a real honor to be a guest on TreasuryCast. Although I’ve never met any of the F&W crew, I feel like I know you all as friends.

I think perhaps the first DC Comic I ever received was the 1978 Superman movie treasury. I devoured that book & still have it to this very day. It’s in disrepair now , but it means a lot to me. My love of Dick Tracy was also enhanced by a treasury

While I’m sad TreasuryCast is closing shop, I’m looking forward to whatever you have up your sleeve. Bravo!

  4. Sad to hear about the last show but I salute you and all your hard work. (Cue Flash Gordon theme)
Have you gotten and better playing Flash Gordon pin ball or did you get rid of it when you moved ??

  5. Just wanted you to know I left a comment on the mighty Thor episode and you missed me this bucky749 I don’t know if I put up to late and missed the deadline or what just thought I’d let you know.

  6. Treasury Cast is truly going out in style! I have and love the Superman: Peace on Earth book. It encapsulates the core of Superman’s character for me. Kal-El gets his super-powers from his Kryptonian birth parents, but he draws just as much on what he learned from the Kents. He can do what he does because he is from the House ofr El, but it’s the farmhouse in Smallville that explains why he does it.

Really looking forward to hearing Alex Ross talk about the Superman/Spider-Man treasury, even though it is your final episode. This has been so much fun and will be missed.

    1. Oh and nice bit from The Adventures of Superman radio show at the end. My wife and I have been listening to that series via podcast since the early days of the pandemic. and discovered that the announcer and narrator Jackson Beck was also the narrator of the GI Joe cartoon in the 80s. I love unusual connections like that.

  7. (So far I’ve only listened to the first half of episode 99’s double feature.) I was the one who previously commented that the Ross/Dini treasuries sales numbers went down every year. After doing some research on Comichron, I’ll revise my feedback to say that sales trended downward, leveled off, then bumped up a bit for the last one. Keep in mind that Comichron’s estimates only include distribution through comic stores, not bookstores. Here are the rounded numbers:

    Superman- 55k
    Batman – 49k
    Shazam – 33k
    Wonder Woman – 35k
    JLA Secret Origins – 34k
    JLA Liberty & Justice – 42k

    For comparison, JLA Heaven’s Ladder – 37k

  8. 99 not out! Thanks for the penultimate episode, Rob, how great to hear Henry, Ryan and Chris talking Alex Ross and Paul Dini.

‘Sober’ is a great word to describe the tone of these books, Rob. I don’t enjoy these books massively, although I do appreciate the art. Re: the format making them seem more like legitimate works of art with which you could impress non-comic-loving friends, to me they did seem more like children’s books because they were big pictures – glorious pictures – with a bunch of words slapped on them teaching you a lesson. Just not much fun, so earnest, though the JLA book did raise the bar a tad. These seem to be books that we all appreciate, but nobody seems to really love.

Anyroadup, bring on episode 100, and the most exciting comic of my childhood!

  9. Not only am I pretty sure that’s Rich Koz (Svegoolie’s real identity) in the Pentagon, it’s clearly Svengoolie himself in Arkham Asylum, as seen on the Batcave’s monitor many pages later (far left, just before Two-Face).

  10. A terrific 2-in-1 show, gentlemen! Thank you for the interesting discussions.

In both look and characterisations, I tend to think of the Ross/Dini superheroes as being close to the Silver Age Platonic Ideal for each character – somehow the combination of the realistic painted image and the characterisation of each hero manages to capture their quintessential spirit.
Perhaps that’s partly why it’s harder to imagine these heroes dealing withe murkiness and unpleasantness of Real World issues?

Just wanted to thank you for the Treasury-cast series, Rob. Although I only have a couple of treasury books in my own collection, your clear passion for the format has been the golden thread through the whole series; many congratulations on all 100 episodes!

  11. Love this format, loved this podcast and loving this episode (still halfway through). The network all-stars are ringers, and you know I’m always here for Henry. And thanks for letting me play!

  12. Outstanding double feature Rob! I kind of agree with Martin on these books. I bought them when they came out, and oohed and ahhhed at the art which was fantastic. But the stories were a bit of a downer. I have never loved stories where the heroes are trying to solve real world problems unless they really make changes to the world and then it is not “our” world anymore. Kind of like Squadron Supreme or the Authority. Or even Watchmen. In those situations the changes stuck whereas in these stories the heroes “fail”. Not to say they cannot be great stories, but not my favorite.

Anyway a great discussion (as usual) with 3 great guests. Looking forward to the finale and the ultimate Treasury Edition.

  13. Good riddan–uhm… Sorry, I was thinking of one of Ryan’s shows.

TreasuryCast has had a great run, and there’s no shame in ending it a 100. Looks like you kept one of the best for the end, too! As for the big Alex Ross books, great commentary from all guests involved. I want to defend the Trinity in Challengers of the Unknown costumes – the reason they wear them in that story is to show the Challs that they are valued members of the JLU, and that when on a mission with, and led by, the Challs, you wear their damn uniform. It’s a great bit of humility and respect from Superman.

  14. Great show, Rob, Henry, Chris, and others. I own both these treasures and always love thumbing through them purely for Alex Ross’s art.

Full disclosure, I wasn’t a big fan of Ross’s look for Superman. I understand it’s the model he chose, but he always looked a bit too old. In contrast, it worked perfectly in Kingdom Come for the much older Supes, so all is forgiven.

Okay, I guess it’s time to say nice things. As I’ve mentioned before, Treasurycast was the first FW show I listened to and the first show on which I appeared as a guest. Rob has been incredibly supportive and kind to me ever since and was a big reason I have my own show starting this month – send all complaints to Rob Kelly at fire and water podcast .com

I’m very proud of your work on this show, Rob. And I’m proud to call you a friend. Seriously, who makes new friends in middle age? Not easy.

It’s been a great run, thanks for the memories and entertainment. I raise a glass of Yoo Hoo and Baileys to you (What? No, you’re the weirdo). So, onward and upward… I guess. I’m not good at goodbyes.
