  1. I was weaned on Kong 76, and it has stayed magical to me over the years, I’m happy to say. Lange was my first true love and I SQUALLED when Kong was sent, bloody and broken, to the Towers’ plaza floor. The Gold Key comic I bought with some allowance money
(I got an actual .25 cent copy!)
at a Ben Franklin store (feeling nostalgic yet?) and it was my bible! The original, and I remember it well, still have it somewhere, was slightly different from the coloring used on the $1 version. It looked a little more realistic, less bright and technicolored. Still, anyone who was a kid then must remember that this was one of the first “blockbuster” films that brought with it a MASSIVE advertising and sales campaign. Books, tshirts, Pizza Hut glasses set, gum cards, toys, games, posters, key chains with an actual Kong hair inside it, videos, Viewmaster reels in 3d, magazine covers, novels, comics, etc. This was real movie magic that, sadly, doesn’t exist anymore with all the instant gratification going on now. We had this delicious build up to Kong that literally had people in a frenzy. It was a Christmas release too, and despite the false reputation and lies told about it, it was a VERY successful film! 2nd highest grosser of the year, I believe. It also won an Oscar for special effects. But out of all the wondrous things this Kong means to me, it’s John Barry’s score that still makes my heart leap and can allow me the suspension of disbelief needed when viewing a film of it’s time after being desensitized by cgi. Still, and for me, always will be, the King of all Kongs. Great reviews! Thank you for this welcomed visit with a dear old friend.
