This episode’s stories were maybe as scary as the suicidal clown one. While not outright horror, they seriously gave me the heebee jeebies.
First off, Batman and Robin so casually talking about how the Joker might benefit from a frontal lobotomy was insane. Things were simpler then. Of course, as a kid, my only exposure to lobotomies as a kid was Landon in Planet of the Apes (http://www.imdb.com/media/rm1718654976/nm0348248?ref_=nm_phs_md_3) While I am sure our surgical skills are better than the apes, it still freaked me out as a kid.
As for the Superman story, I don’t know if I have ever rooted for the villains more than in this story. Weatherspoon is soooooo elitist obnoxious. Comparing himself to Einstein and other greats, how his discovery will change everything, Even talking about his relationship with Perry, his brilliant parents, his Voila. And the voice is just sibilant enough to make me cringe. As Chris says, he’s the guy that would say ‘well enough about me. now you talk about me.’ Glad Superman actually gave him a science lesson … things need to be studied, tested, etc. I guess Voila was a bust.
Anyways, I am a smidge more hopeful about BvS, I hated Man of Steel. So maybe there is no way to go but up?
THANK YOU Anj! I was starting to feel bad about taking shots at Weatherspoon. I’d say Voila was a bust…but maybe he sold that Apple PIe recipe to Sara Lee or something.
Speaking of which…I forgot to mention…what happened to Voila? It was kind of forgotten at the end so they could have the heartwarming gag at the end with the inheritance subplot.
As for the Batman story, I can see why it would freak you out as a kid. I remember getting a reprint of the first Batman, Robin and Joker stories from an Oreos giveaway, and the Joker venom deaths were VERY disturbing to my 10 year old brain!

These POWER RECORDS episodes bring me so much joy! I don’t have a lot of insightful comments, but just wanted to say how much I enjoy these! Please keep producing them! And once you run out of POWER RECORDS, just start all over again!

The PR Superman stories were evidently produced in three waves and the first wave – which Weatherspoon’s Catalyst is part of – is the weakest to me. “Mystery of the Mad Minnows” is particularly strange. There’s a certain stodginess to them and to the portrayal of Superman that does lend itself to comparisons to the George Reeves TV series. Definitely an easier-on-the-ears Lois in those though. The way she described the silver bullet aliens from the “Alien Creatures” story as looking “like beautiful silver hummingbirds” always stuck with me.
Not enough good things can be said about “Stacked Cards”. That’s one of the jewels in the Power Records crown.
I have to disagree on the Batman series. “Stacked Cards” was a swing and a miss. Great artwork, and the atmosphere of the story was dead on … but the plot was strictly pedestrian. Makes me wonder why Power Records didn’t simply adapt “The Joker’s Five-Way Revenge” (from Batman #251, September 1973).
I should have added (before stabbing the “reply” button) the other three Batman LP stories were far superior, especially “If Music Be the Food of Death” featuring The Riddler. I think E. Nelson Bridwell wrote that one.
