  1. Nice. I have one friend who is really into Rat Queens, so I’ve been meaning to take her recommendation to heart for a bit. I guess the second opinion supports the first!

  2. Thanks for the recommendation. I’ve seen Rat Queens on the shelves before, and thought it looked interesting, but I’ve never picked it up. I’ll definitely need to add it to my reading list. I’m a sucker for stories that capture the feel of a tabletop RPG adventure.

  3. I still intend to read Rat Queens one day (everyone I know who has read it really enjoyed it,) but I’d caution against singing the praises of Roc Upchurch too much, as he was kicked off the book after being arrested for domestic abuse, including assault and rape. I’m not saying you can’t enjoy his art – I like plenty of art created by abusers – but Upchurch isn’t on the side of women, jsyk. The artist following, Tess Fowler, left after feeling she was being pushed out to prepare for Upchurch’s return. Writer Kurtis J. Wiebe alleged otherwise and has spoken very negatively of Fowler since. I for one am more inclined to believe Fowler, and all of this is why Rat Queens has dropped far, far down my to read list.

  4. Your enthusiasm sold me, and luckily Comixology had volume 1 on sale. Just finished reading it, and what a trip! (Yes, I’m old enough to say that unironically.) Great characters in both visuals and personality. Crazy action. Deceptively involved story. (The PLOT! The PLO-O-O–OT!) And not for kids. Oh no indeed. My girls are “almost” old enough, but I wouldn’t recommend it for them as it’s too violent for their tastes. But I had fun with it!

Oddly, I’m not that into fantasy overall. Sure, I’ve read Lord of the Rings and Narnia, but not a lot else. And I never got into RPGs. Oh I tried, but I was never good at it, so I didn’t actively pursue it. However, I picked up lots of the genre’s conventions, so I know a fair bit about them, letting me appreciate Rat Queens on that level, too.

Thanks for covering this one, my Punchers! Till next time.
(Guess my unsecret is out. I am SLOW listening and commenting on podcasts. Sigh.)
