Tough Like a Girl #4 – Sunny Side Up

A young girl named Sunny is sent to Florida to spend the summer with her grandfather… in a retirement community. What’s a girl to do to pass the time? Oh, we don’t know, find people’s lost cats, eat dinner and 4pm and… maybe discover comics? Lis and Nathaniel take a look at this summer vacation period piece.

Our theme song was composed and performed by erica dreisbach, and you can find more of her work at her website right here. And our logo art is by Nic Buxom.

One response to “Tough Like a Girl #4 – Sunny Side Up

  1. Another good episode for a fun book. Like you say, it’s a quick breezy read, which felt like the point. Rather than have tons of narrative text for Sunny’s thoughts, which could have meant even more melodrama, she’s living as best she can and her struggles are on the inside.

The simple artistic style was just adorable, and a good counterpoint to the serious undertones of how Sunny ended up with her grandfather. It makes the story easier to take. With my kids, I took this story as a chance to discuss the situation with Sunny’s brother, which I’m sure you agree is best. If that was the authors’ goal, then they did a fine job.

Oh, and the comics in the story. Such a trip for Sunny to like Swamp Thing. I wouldn’t have guessed that choice. Nice.

    Thanks, Punchers!
