  1. Ah, Ms Marvel. This series had so much buzz when it started that I knew I’d check it out eventually. I liked it so much, my girls had to sit through reading it with me, Course they enjoyed it as well, because they’re great kids. (Yes, I’m a crazy proud dad. Not sorry.) 😉

As 100% W.A.S.P., I’m in no position to judge if this story falls into stereotypes. All I will offer is I sympathized with Kamala a great deal. My father was a United Methodist minister, so growing up in a strongly religious household rang true here. What would have been overkill is for Kamala to be the extra-rebellious teenager that some “preacher’s kids” become. Instead, her faith influenced the kind of person and hero should would become in a positive way. That’s a welcome portrayal in today’s comics.

Another aspect of Kamala is how compassionate she is. Helping ordinary people. Caring about her neighborhood and city, not wanting to cause wanton destruction as is typical for superheroes. It harkens back to William Messner-Loebs run on Wonder Woman, where she has to change from being “a hero” to getting a job at Mickie D’s, and helps her community as only she can. I don’t remember if this is explored much in the first volume, but that’s what really set Kamala apart from other heroes, and truly made her Ms Marvel.

Yes, you should read the other volumes just for fun. That’s what I mean whenever I suggest that for other series. Like Squirrel Girl. Seriously Lis, you need to read the other Squirrel Girl books. Seriously!

    Keep on Punching!

  2. Hello again Liz and Nathaniel,
Great discussion of Ms Marvel’s first trade. As someone with well stocked local library and a lot of time on their hands I’m pleased to inform you that the following issue do in fact develope the supporting cast. With Bruno, Aamir, Karmela’s mum and yes even Zoe getting subplots that evolve the characters without feeling unture to their established personers. I’m not going to spoil them so you’ll have to read ahead to find out. Good work and carry on punching (preferably with embigened fists).

PS. Could you please plug my new podcast Brothers in time where me and my brother discuss episodes of doctor who available now on SoundCloud. If you will thanks and if you won’t then it’s already to late because your reading this on air and my plan to marginaly inflate my Listenership is complete MA HA HA HA HA HA!!!!!
