The mention of avian aliens with nontraditional gender roles reminds me of the the Yazz, an androgynous creature from another planet with a humanoid body but a head shaped like a pterodactyl’s. It only appeared in a few issues of Justice League America during the mid 90s.

I haven’t seen this book, but dang, that is some cute artwork! I think it would be a hit with my kids. Delightful.
I don’t have much to add, except that the Mabel character reminded me of another Mabel, from Disney’s Gravity Falls. Replace the jetpack with a grappling hook, done! Could this a trend of a whole generation of kick butt Mabels? We can only hope.
