Hawkgirl’s much-anticipated return to avenge the murder of her husband Carter Hall is collected in this 256-page trade paperback. She’s joined by fellow returing JSAer Jay “The Flash” Garrick in pursuing Extant, the killer of the original Hawkman, Atom, Dr. Mid-Nite, and Hourman. How exactly did a brute like Hank “Hawk” Hall become the tyrannical Monarch of a possible future, possessing mastery over time, and what role did the Lords of Order and Chaos play in this circumstance? The epic ‘Zero Hour’ saga rocked the founding members of the DCU’s Seminal Super-Team, but this story extends far beyond one isolated event. SECOND EARTH: THE FIRST WAVE TPB (NEW PRINTING)
written by J. MICHAEL STRACZYNSKI & BRIAN AZZARELLO
    art by JULIAN LOPEZ
    cover by LEE BERMEJO
The resolution of the Infinite Crisis has restored the Multiverse, and DC’s shocking new pulp Earth is finally unveiled! In the shadows of war, the roots of the Golden Tree cabal grew deep into the heart of a fallen world… and the leaders at the heart of this secret organization see no place in their utopia for heroism.
Doc Savage, struggling with the loss of his father, has been blind to their advance – until now. The Batman knows his pain, and stands with the original superhero against this threat. The debut of the Superman has shaken these criminal conspirators, who reach for horrifying new heights of villainy to nip this heroic renaissance in the bud. The Comet’s flame has already been snuffed out, but Dan “Beetle” Garret, Blane “Wizard” Whitney, Denny “The Spirit” Colt, Robert “Hangman” Dickering, and Rex “Hourman” Tyler are waiting in the wings. Acclaimed screenwriter J. Michael Straczynski (BABYLON 5, AMAZING SPIDER-MAN) and Eisner Award winning writer Brian Azzarello (100 BULLETS, JOKER) join forces to craft a DC universe like you’ve never seen before! For the first time ever, the earliest comic book heroes are united. It’s a world of few, mortal men supermen… Death can come at any moment, and adventure can still be found at every corner of the map! Collects Second Earth #1-6 and Batman/Doc Savage Special #1.

It’s probably not wise to invoke Native American mysticism in the year of our woke 2021, and he’d have to be older than Methusalah by this point, and we’re not even on the same Earth where he helped Swamp Thing go back to the future, but I guess Hawk (son of that guy who scammed you into buying Superman Salutes the Bicentennial) can help Tyson return home (as well as renewing DC’s trademark on– uh– Hawk? How many Hawk books are we putting out this month?) Did that sentence need a period? It ran on for so long with so many tangential brackets, I lost track.

    art by ALEX LEI
    cover by BRUCE TIMM
    variant cover by RAGS MORALES
THE LORDS OF ORDER & CHAOS TIE-IN! Over the ages, flocks of human bird-avatars have been gifted powers to serve as proxies in the conflict between the forces of Order and Chaos. Now that the Kali Yuga– the Age of Chaos– is upon us, Kestrel has resumed stalking and reclaiming the life energy of these avatars of War and Peace for itself. For their protection, Steve Dayton has asked Aquagirl to gather former Titans associates Hawk and Dove, only to discover that there are now two sets of them. Sasha Martens has replaced Dawn Granger’s murdered sister as a Hawk, following years of repressed anger at her killer Hank Hall, who has forced Wiley Wolverman to serve as his new Dove. The dilution of their powers makes them easier prey than ever, at a time when all existence may hinge on the effectiveness of the Hawk and the Dove!

    BEAUTIFUL DREAMER #8
    written by GRACE ELLIS
    art by POP MHAN
    cover by TOM SCIOLI
Like Orion before her, Dreamer finally understands the true nature of Izaya. How in the Old World, the proto-Apokolipsians were the slave classes. How their burnt-out industrial husk of a world had been the best they could salvage in an ongoing war of independence from New Genesis. How Izaya had engaged in unethical experiments to reclaim Apokolips, including the creation of and genocide perpetuated against the Bugs. How absent the Hunger Dogs, Izaya had looked to the Third World for resources to covet and civilizations to exploit. How the Highfather had appeared to the Psions as a messianic figure, who commanded them to create Complex-Complex and the Citadelians in the likeness of Darkseid. How the Citadel had enslaved the Vega System in service to Supertown. How Highfather’s paternalistic chauvinism had prevented any women from being elevated to positions of power even comparable to Granny Goodness’. How Highfather’s perversions had drawn him to take child victims like Esak for his sick desires. How these discoveries had led to the ultimate conflict between fathers and sons, the release of the Exaltation Ruberic, the deaths of the Justice League, the isolation of the Fourth World, and the Vegan celebration of their freedom in the Genesian Spring. And now, the occupation of Apokolips is the first step in the reclamation of Highfather’s fallen glory… unless Dreamer can imagine a way to stop it!

  3. Another great episode with a lot of creative stuff! Always impressed with the imagination of this community.

Hawk and Dove is a series I love and I liked both your new takes on the property. I do wish Sterling Gates had a chance to flesh out his take (where there were other bird avatars – Kestrel of course, but Osprey and Peregrine).

Harbinger of Doom #1 (of 8)
    Writer Tom King
    Artist Mitch Gerads

She was Harbinger, a reluctant hero, saved from tragedy by an alien who then set her up to witness universal destruction and the death of almost everyone she came in contact with. After the Crisis, the heroes only vaguely remember that cataclysm. But they do know that Harbinger always preceded death and stay clear from her. Alone, lost in her thoughts, and reliving the literal death of worlds, Harbinger has to decide what she is. Is she the angel of death? Or a survivor.

    Harbinger #1 (ongoing)
    Writer Sterling Gates
    Artist Pere Perez

Having come through her psychological trauma and realizing that she can be seen as an omen of good, Harbinger begins her quest to be a hero again. There are new lessons to be learned and new friends to make. But what are these visions she is starting to have? Is another Crisis looming? And is she once again the Harbinger of Doom?

    Thanks for humoring me!

  5. THE BLUE BEETLE #8
    written by RAVEN GREGORY
    art by FERNANDO DAGNINO
    cover by ROBERT HACK
In a “lost” tale from the early 20th Century, U.S. Air Force Colonel Adolfito Harrigan was lost in Colombia during a partisan clash while trying to recover his estranged wife and daughter, whose family was being extorted by Nazis seeking access to their platinum mines. Over a decade later, Harrigan’s son Hermenegildo, better known as “Hop,” was himself lured into a trap while investigating his family history. The reformed allied spy Lola Perez, briefly an enemy of Mighty Samson, has requested help from the United States. As she infiltrates the black market in hopes of reuniting with the brother she never knew, salvation seems to come in the form of Dan Garret. When the Golden Age Blue Beetle falters in unfamiliar territory, a previously unknown temporary successor will have to navigate a path to Panama…

Indicted and forcibly removed from a studio certainly headed for a fire sale, all Jock Verner wants it to collect the insurance money on his personal stake in the Blue Devil picture and skip out of the country. All Heat Wave has to do for a piece is to burn down the House of Mystery, with a little push from Baron Winters. What neither knows is that Captain Cold has taken up residence on Santi’s sofa, the not-so-Grim Ghost is haunting the second floor, a mildly infernal Annabeth Chamberlain is in the bedroom, and a flayed Dan Cassidy is on his way down from the attic…

For as long as Sugar Plumm has possessed the abilities of the Orchid, she has exploited them to serve her own selfish ends. The strain of abiding by United Broadcasting President Samuel Tanner’s sensationalized heroic dictates has worn her down, and she doesn’t care about the consequences of walking. Spike has already had a lifetime’s worth of Sugar’s demands, so when Alba Garcia shows up at his doorstep in pursuit of the Orchid, he’s ready to turn. Meanwhile, escaped A.C.E. detainee Hyathis has made her way to Metropolis. Sensing the Orchid’s presence, she sees an agent to help pursue the Oblivion Stone that could easily fall under her sway. Where others might view the High Panala of the planet Alstair as the paramount threat, Tanner sees opportunity, and resorts to his own Blackrock to seize it! LYLA MICHAELS: THE HARBINGER #1
    written by MAGDALENE VISAGGIO
art and cover by EDUARDO PANSICA
Orphaned and adrift in the Atlantic Ocean, young Lyle was rescued and raised by Mar Novu, the ancient alien Monitor. Groomed to help him maintain the multiverse, Lyla was bestowed extraordinary abilities to maneuver across time, space, and dimensions, including the power to divide herself infinitely as The Harbinger. After the Monitor was killed by his evil brother through a corrupted Lyla duplicate, and the multiverse collapsed into only two prime realities, a diminished Harbinger lost her sense of purpose.
When the Futuresmiths attempted to alter history through the YES! virus impregnated within Cir-El, a fabricated Supergirl, their machinations left a crack in space-time that only Lyla could detect. In a pocket universe where the last remnants of the old multiverse yet lived, Superboy-Prime exploited this rift, leading to the re-engagement of the seemingly Infinite Crisis across all time and space. The energies unleashed restored much of the extraordinary power Lyla had lost in the wake of Monitor’s incorporation of the Wildstorm and Milestone parallel universes into a new Prime Earth.

As the guardian of a renewed multiverse, Harbinger has faced numerous challenges, including run-ins with Apokolips (thanks in part to a tumultuous relationship with Powerboy,) the reality-altering Dark Angel, the death-dealing Silver Banshee, a Bizarro duplicate, the murderous militant Superwoman, the Worldkiller known as Reign, and the Cyborg Superman; plus stints in the Red Lantern Corps and 30th Century Legion of Super-Heroes.

Now, it is Mobius the Anti-Monitor whose light has been extinguished, as the entire Antimatter universe has been eradicated. While Alpheus the World Forger mourns both his brother and the compromising of his greatest creation, their mother Perpetua rallies against what she perceives to be a move to end her own existence. Forces are at play that could alter or destroy the work of the Monitor, and in this moment of ultimate crisis, Lyla Michaels stands as the Harbinger of either its salvation or its doom…

Following the death in custody of an unarmed, nonviolent suspect in Suicide Slum, public scrutiny of the case is escalating tensions within the city. When a grand jury acquits the offers involved, activist Summer Day arrives in town to press for a more thorough accounting. Day whips up a firestorm of additional controversy through her pathological hatred of police and white savior complex. As an ex-cop, Dick’s loyalties are tested between his deference to authority and his detective’s sense that something is very wrong with the scenario his brethren have laid out. When the Hyena looks to spill red blood all over the thin blue line, will Nightwing stand in her path, and should he? Plus, Flamebird’s secret collection of DNA samples from the greater Batman family has finally yielded a positive match with Mirage’s daughter, and the consequences of this revelation will be far reaching.

As suspicions rise around her presence and standing, it seems safer for her to return to missions than to remain among the mafiosos. Barbara Gordon returns to her roots as Oracle for Amanda Waller to gather and motivate a squad of hardened meta-criminals into a fighting unit under the former Huntress’ command. WONDER GIRL #774
    written by JOSIE CAMPBELL
art & cover by GARDENIO LIMA
Hippolyta variant cover by DON KRAMER
“ALL GODS CHILDREN” PRELUDE! When the goddesses created Paradise Island, to insure that every Amazonian life was held as precious and inviolate, it was forbidden for anyone to enter, leave, or conceive. None could be added to the population, nor subtracted. Since Hippolyta perished in The Imperiex War, her children have had to face revelations held secret for centuries, marked in part by their very existence. Hippolyta broke the pact when she lay with Zeus to conceive Jason, as when Myrina the Black discovered the act and took Darkseid as her lover, though the product of both unions were exiled from Themyscira. Later, when Diana was sculpted from clay and given immaculate life by the Gods, a covetous Philippus similarly crafted Nubia, who was stolen away by one of her patrons: Ares. However, Diana remained, and because she was imbued with the lost soul of Hippolyta’s firstborn in a previous incarnation, her existence tipped the scales. Donna was only allowed to be rescued and raised by the Amazons because of the invalidated pact, and unlike the children born to the Amazons after Diana’s creation, she was the first Themysciran adopted as a total alien. Because of this, and her adoption as daughter and sister of the departed royalty, the Bana-Mighdall have petitioned for Donna to assume the crown, and represent them as more than second-class citizens on the island…

“ALL GODS CHILDREN” BEGINS! The existence of Hippolyta’s bastard eldest child Jason was uncovered following the murder of his half-brother and mentor, Heracles, by Grail and Darkseid. Joined by Achilles Warkiller and dubbed The Argonaut, Jason has returned with a fleet in tow. As the only blood child of the departed Queen, Jason demands both her crown and citizenship for the male offspring of the Amazons that he’s recovered from the likes of Hephaestus. However Nu’bia, now Goddess of War following the death of Ares, arrives with her own forces and claim of succession. The Fury Helena Kosmatos hasn’t argued for any stake, but is courted by the immortal Amazons, who have themselves been divided by the various claimants. Dolphin, Animal Man and Congorilla petition Donna for access to the Purple Healing Ray to save their felled fellow Forgotten Heroes. Finally, Artemis joins the dispute with the former Wonder Girl, Cassie Sandsmark, daughter of Zeus. The pair have been duped by Circe and Ares’ daughter Lyta, on a quest for their own Grail…

  6. As usual, I learned a lot from your ideas on where to take characters whether they play a big or small role in the history of DC.
My favorite of these books was Tim Price’s series starring Hawkman and his incredible Absorbiscon. This is an idea that seems too big for a comic. I understand why Uncle Sam, who embodies American ideals, would attack a ‘hero’ who is antithetical to so many of them — things like testifying against yourself, warrentless intrusions into private business, making thought (not actions) criminal.
Every hero that shares this Hawkman’s world is going to have to take a stand on this issue. So, this needs to be a crossover event that involves everyone in the shared world.
Will his actions cause all aliens to be excluded from crime fighting? Will this set off a Marvel style persecution of mutant powers? He says it is tech, but we can’t build it. Maybe he’s a mind reader or psychic powers are needed to use the tech. Will the courts allow his evidence or free every one because his special knowledge taints any other evidence he or the police find?
I might actually buy tie-ins as well as the event title to find out how my favorites react to the event (not all of them,of course. I’m a senior citizen on a fixed income).
That was a very big idea.
Thanks for bringing Tim into your podcast.

When the mystical Starheart restored Alan Scott’s youth, his still-elderly bride Molly Mayne had no idea that it had also granted the wish of a young woman to take her place as both Harlequin and, potentially, as Alan’s lover. What she didn’t know was that the confusion and heartbreak served an ulterior purpose, to conceal the Starheart’s escaping Alan Scott’s body to assume a human form based on an exaggerated version of Alan. It’s signature was always manifesting wishes, so what better a revised incarnation than the form of a Faustian devil, namely Neron? The Starheart couldn’t take its master’s soul for itself, but it could manipulate one from his mistress. Khalid knew, which is why he accepted Molly’s company, and with the Helm of Nabu can now begin a final reckoning for his predecessor.

card stock variant cover by DAVE GROTE JR.
C.A.T.-7 could not have anticipated ending up facing down Basilisk in Paraguay, the one country that still employs World War II-era tanks. Even a terrifically battered, nearly century old M3 Stuart can intimidate lightly armed insurgents, but Grifter is less than impressed to find himself sliding into one as the only barrier between himself and Regulus. Enemy supertanks and spaceships encircle the team in the “Battlezone,” but if Cash can’t stop them, who will? With missiles trained on this lowly, haunted tank, could salvation arrive in the form of a ghostly Confederate General on horseback? Meanwhile, Dart attempts to convince Spy Smasher that Cham’s ability to analyze lifeforms for replication will be essential in detecting the influence of the Dark Destroyer, but Armstrong is only concerned with enforcing anti-alien law.

    MOURNINGSTAR #10
    written by DAVID BARNETT
    art by ANDREA SORRENTINO
    cover by MATTHEW CLARK
Zandia’s prior association with the Hierarchy of International Vengeance and Eliminations laid the groundwork for the present influence of their successors, Holistic Integration for Viral Equality. A secular rival to the Church of Brother Blood, the techno-cult has found favor with Lady Zand, who seeks release from the superstitions of the past, and a path to absolute power unrestricted by Brother Blood. Meanwhile, Ulu Vakk makes the mistake of visiting the captive Ryak, whose awareness of the Legion’s toying with the continuum means that everything “Color Kid” thought he knew of his life is a lie…

  9. Great episode! I have to admit you guys had me at Lady Cop and Hercules Unbound! I also enjoyed that Young Diana story so would enjoy the Hawkgirl suggestion. I think my favorite title out of these would be Tim’s idea for Harbinger. Good stuff.

  10. Even though I have not been commenting, I have been listening and I am consistently amazed at the depth of creativity of story ideas from Siskoid and his guests! This is such a wonderful exploration of all these characters! More Pooch!
