Who’s Editing #2: Blame Bat-Mite

Fire and Water Presents: Who's Editing! It's the new show in which Siskoid and his guest - in this case, Dark Knight expert Chris Franklin - open an issue of Who's Who: The Definitive Directory of the DC Universe (or some other encyclopedia-type comic) and imagine a line of books based solely (and obligatorily) on the heroes found within. With Who's Who #2 before them, have Siskoid and Chris hit a gold mine? Or is it more difficult than they think to base a line of books on the Bat Family?

This podcast is a proud member of the FIRE AND WATER PODCAST NETWORK:

  1. Some good ideas guys.

I have the Jose Luis Garcia Lopez drawn issues of Atari Force, but I’ve never gotten around to reading them. I kept mis-hearing Babe & Hukka as “Babe & Hooker.” Hardly the title for an all-ages comic…actually it sounds more like a porno movie.

Anyway, I’m up for any Batman that is more 70s or animated series. I think the animated series Batman WAS the 70s Batman in tone, at least. One part I disagree on is the Batman/Black Canary marriage. B&B 197 is my favorite B&B issue. I grew up on and loved the Len Wein run, which had the Bruce Wayne/Selina Kyle romance. As a result of my fondness for these stories, Catwoman is Batman’s forever-one-and-only to me.

I’ve always seen Green Arrow as a loud mouth blowhard. In fact, I thought i could never hate a DC hero more than I do GA, until Damien Wayne came along and I realized I was mistaken. Excuse me for that aside. Yeah, GA is really just a Batman wannabe. I still remember when I first read the JLA issue where Black Canary “friend-zones” Batman to get with Green Arrow. I thought, “Isn’t that like turning down a chance to see Elvis in his 50s prime to watch some guy who finished 35th in an Elvis impersonator contest that only had 10 contestants?”

Batgirl has always been my “comic book crush” so I don’t know what my plans for her would be. I think I would want a little older, more confident and seasoned Batgirl. Jose Luis Garcia Lopez on art, please.

    1. I agree on the Batman/Catwoman 4EVA notion, Gothos, but in the spirit of this “thought experiment”, I tried to mix things up. There’s enough flirtation over the years (again, gross All-Star Batman aside) between Bats and BC for me to make the leap to them as the Power Couple of my universe. It made things more fun for me in a “What If” scenario.

      Chris

Stefanie Savage is true to her family name. Her however-many-greats-ago-father that makes a hunnerd years was a fighter pilot or something. But, like, who cares when the world is overrun with people who can literally fly and are half-gods and stuff. I mean, what does any plain ol’ girl even matter these days, right? And 100%, Stefanie will remind you at every opportunity that when everyone else is super, nothing is special. But especially not whether or not there’s anything in her panties that would get caught in the bunch.

Big Barda 1971 variant cover by STEVE RUDE
In the aftermath of APOKOLIPS, the AWOL Female Fury Big Barda has been laid low. Widowed, betrayed, abandoned, and imprisoned, Barda has little left in the way of hope. She’s surrounded and dis-empowered by her mortal enemies, who treat torture as a pastime and crushing her will as a quarterly goal. Survival will take a miracle, but you don’t spend the best years of your life with the greatest escape artist in existence without picking up a few tricks. And anyway, Barda was the most fearsome Fury in her day, and fury is the one thing Barda still has in abundance.

    BAT-MITE FAMILY #1
    written by IAN MCGINTY
    art by TY TEMPLETON
    cover by BILL MORRISON
It’s not like THE BATMAN is really dead or anything, but he’s the thin blue scalloped cape between a civil Gotham City and absolute Bat-nanas! Somebody’s got to keep a lid on this town until the Dark Knight returns, so it’s up to his #1 fan to gather the Bat-Mite Family! We heard you liked Batmen, so we put a Man-Bat in your Batboat! Die Fledermaus put himself in the Batplane. He’s a Neo-Nazi, but hopefully there are good on both sides? The magically reanimated corpse of Earth-Two Batman disagrees by way of a Batarang, but his aim isn’t what it used to be, and did I mention Fledermaus has control of THE BATPLANE! But also, Bat-E-2 was licking Tim’s scalp earlier and I fear he may go full zombie. But anyway, we’ve got all the Best Bats! Well, Bat Lash was booked, but still, Batman Forever! By which I mean we’re trying to get ’80s heartthrob turned method actor Val Kilmer to once again accept Batman’s Utility Belt, but he won’t break character! We were able to get him into the Batmobile, though. You haven’t lived until you hear Mark Twain bellow, “Chicks dig the car.” More of a hollow whistle really, but still.

art and cover by SERGIO DAVILA
card stock variant cover by GARY FRANK
You could argue that we never really shook off the tyranny of 19th Century robber barons, and in the absence of the world’s greatest super-heroes, feudalism threatens to return to dominance! Among the first and boldest to make their moves toward a new order are The Barony! Reclaiming the throne of Markovia, Baron Bedlam threatens his European neighbors. His primary opponent in the region is Baron Blitzkrieg, whose Shadowspire criminal organization affords him a global reach, but lack of a regional concentration of power leaves him vulnerable. Into this mix comes Baron Winters, his motivations and interests vague, but his quiet assembling of opposition clear. And how will the undying druid Blackbriar Thorn act as a spoiler for the lot?

    MOURNINGSTAR #1
    written by DAVID BARNETT
art & cover by ANDREA SORRENTINO
Zandia is not the anti-mecca of a cosmic dominion ruled by the unholy Trigon. He was not reborn in the flesh on Earth through the mating of the half-siblings Raven and Azrael. In fact, the incarnation of the Church of Blood’s centennial messiah was prematurely cut down while the supposed he-spawn of Trigon was meant to be acting as his caretaker. This guileless, incompetent, simpering fool in no Angel of Death, as spoken of in the prophesies. Only misfortune has befallen the worshipers of Brother Blood since his arrival. In pursuit of a new road to Armageddon, other false idols seek to gain purchase in the souls of mankind. Perhaps it would be best to offer this supposed Azrael to our enemies in the Order of St. Dumas, who find his very existence an intolerable abomination? But why has this mysterious woman known only as Bounty offered to deliver him for us…?

      1. Eh, I’ll be out of decent ideas by…. probably the post I just did before replying. And it’s a lot easier to come up with novel angles after hearing two other people brainstorm, so I’m just feeding off the show. I think Who’s Editing has replaced Who’s Who in my heart, mind, and listening/feedback schedule, so I’m enthused to see it continue (and relieved you’re going in order, so I can hopefully get ahead on working up these comments before each episode drops.)

        1. I can’t promise it’ll always be in order, but I’ll try to give people a head’s up at the end of any given episode if the next one is going to break continuity!

          1. I was too fried after my last post to do anything besides start work on Vol. III, so fingers crossed!

  3. great show, fellas. Cfranks definitely has an era he loves!

How is it nobody pitched a Batman story about an actual batman? An attache during a war?

The Genesian Spring has seen millennia-old regimes changed, violent unrest across entire solar systems, and created an intergalactic refugee crisis. When former members of Atari Force find themselves relying on the kindness of terrestrials, new dictates from the Council of Homeworld Security see grossly inhuman practices employed against the “x-tras.” Babe is the subject of a most unusual family separation. Blue-skinned, fourteen feet tall, possessed of immeasurable strength… and still growing– only a toddler of his species. A creature like Babe could prove an invaluable asset to bio-engineering, but have you ever tried to get a two year old to cooperate, especially when you’ve taken away his mommy and locked him in a cage?

It started with a tingling sensation at the soles of her feet, followed by a spreading numbness. The twisted ankle wasn’t so bad, until she sprained her knee jumping across rooftops, and couldn’t feel it until her muscles gave out entirely. Barbara Gordon spent three years as a paraplegic in a wheelchair, and just when she had finally accepted her new reality, it was upended by an experimental surgery. Babs could stand again, and Batgirl could bound. But now, slowly, steadily, the regression. She could have spent this borrowed time loving Dick Grayson, or swaggering through the halls of Congress. It’s already too late for that. But Gotham City still needs heroes, or heroines, in this case. As Oracle, Barbara had commanded the Birds of Prey, since dissolved. This time, she can call on Bat-Girls past: the crossbow vigilante Huntress, the daughter of crime seeking redemption Spoiler, the athletic dilettante seeking validation Flamebird… but not the daughter of assassins Cassandra Cain. The former Black Bat has been long missing, and her parents have come looking into her last know residence. Will Barbara Gordon be able to save her fleeting mobility for a final confrontation with the madman who put a bullet through her spine, or will David Cain lay low the current and soon former Batgirl with another?

    BEAUTIFUL DREAMER #1
    written by GRACE ELLIS
    art by POP MHAN
    cover by PHILIP TAN
By definition, the citizens of New Genesis can only suffer First World problems. Uncouth immigrants in their midst getting into brawls and otherwise acting out. Sabre-rattling from swarthy foreigners a world away. Pest control managing occasional infestations of (sentient) lower life forms. But in the aftermath of APOKOLIPS, a harsh reality is setting in. Supertown’s infrastructure ruined as it came crashing to the ground. Untended bodies strewn everywhere, creating fertile breeding grounds for ungodly pathogens. Supply chains once taken for granted have broken down. Starving Bugs are compromising food reserves. Criminal migrants with filthy encampments tainting the forests. And they speak ill of the very Source, even as there is no Highfather to save our bodies and souls. From these ruins comes a Beautiful Dreamer, who envisions a Genesis made New again. The way we remember it, majestic and impervious, with fresh clean Feelgoods to heighten serenity. What a lovely vision to aspire to…

card stock variant cover by ROBSON ROCHA
She was trained by the greatest super-heroes of a golden age to be at the vanguard of the next generation, but Dinah Lance simply wasn’t up to the job. As the world’s greatest heroes and her best friends perished, Dinah could only look on. Being one of the world’s great martial artists, with a bonus sonic scream, didn’t rate in their company or in this fight. Whether it was embarrassment or some sort of death wish that motivated her request to S.T.A.R. Labs for a one-way ticket to Apokolips, a sympathetic Vibe would do his best to help. While her intended destination was unreachable, where she landed seemed a natural: Earth 2. This was a world of wonders who had survived repeated invasion attempts by Apokolips, and while its Justice Society was not the one that raised her, it would be the one to take her to the next level. The Black Canary had focused so intently on developing her body in secret, that the late arrival of her Canary Cry was an afterthought– employed for blunt force. Only now will she finally begin to grasp the full spectrum and precision of her sonic abilities: impersonation, radar detection across miles of terrain, ultrasonography of battlefield injuries, lethal precision shockwave whistles– and when she’s mastered them, it will be her opponents left crying…

We don’t question the innocence of her relationship with Johnny Thunder. We don’t speculate where the promiscuity or drugs came in. How at the Lances’ request, she was just gone one day with Dr. Fate to get “help,” only to be returned years later for her father’s funeral. Who was the odd little blind Asian fellow with her… where did they go after… when did Sara start wearing so much white? Don’t ask about that. It doesn’t matter anymore. Not long after, Batman of all people saw her die. The Caped Crusader, rendered helpless by a blow from the world’s premier martial artist, looked on helplessly as a brainwashed Bronze Tiger stabbed Sara to death. 6. I really love these episodes and wish I had the time to Frank this and give my books.

But the one I will give is:

    Beautiful Dreamer #1:
    Written by Kelly Thompson
    Art/covers by Bilquis Evely
Variants by Terry and Rachel Dodson

    – what could be better than being a new god? Being a social media influencer! After spending time in paradise, Beautiful Dreamer comes to Earth to ‘escape’ her duties as a god. But being gorgeous with an avant garde fashion sense gets her noticed quickly. Suddenly she has more followers as an ersatz mortal than she did as a Fourth World deity! Can she somehow turn her newfound fame into a font of good? Or will the cynicism of this world lead her to her own person Apocalypse. Will she achieve her own dreams? And what will she do when the rest of the Forever People ask her to return!

  7. Balloon Buster would take place in an alternate WWI where steam rules. Steve “the Savage” Shavarian has the world’s only gasoline powered “petro-plane”, and has used it to single-handedly destroy the Iron Zeppelin corps of the Central Empires. The war is winding down, and he’s turning his attention to avenging his family, killed during the Armenian genocide, when the Earth is invaded by aliens! These aliens are the people of old Metal Men villain Balloon Man, and they begin to destroy what little is left of Europe. Now he’s got a whole new type of balloon to bust. Other WWI characters could appear, as well as ancestors of DC standards like Kents and Waynes.

  8. Impressive podcast most impressive. Let’s see what would I do? First Barren Earth I give it to Grant Morrison and Frank quietly. The concept is sounds weird. So instead of trying to figure it out and bring back vertigo. Then hand them a few issues and say here do something with this. Revamp it as you like leave politics out. And you can have the credit if it does well at the blame if it fails. Make sure they get the decent budget the need for it. And stand out of the way just once in a while looking at just make sure it has some sort of editing on it.

Moving right along. Onto beautiful dreamer. I make her an agent of Morpheus. So she becomes part of the dreaming handling issues with people’s dreams and problems that happen within their. There are probably creatures that would cause issues within the dreams. Like theNacht)mahr. And other creatures that would cause problems. To make sure the endless It’s status quo she would be sitting there to fix these. Maybe she had been born on new Genesis. But at this time she has been brought into work for Morpheus. Perhaps she almost died in a battle between Apocalypse and new Genesis. And she was saved at the last minute by Morpheus or his sister death. And this is what she had to do now.Deattáns could become a problem. Or the sorceress Huld from biking this could be the villain and sometimes fellow protagonist. I would give it to Neil Gaiman to write and have Franchesco (the guy who drew the Savage Sea Dragon comics for image. As the artist. Because if you’re going to have a character called beautiful dreamer she needs to look well beautiful.)Francesco Francavilla I think that’s his name. But, his recent artwork looks very different than what was done in She-Dragon.

At any rate moving on batgirl, well first of all it won’t be Barbara Gordon because I’m leaving her in the wheelchair. And she will be leaving the birds pray at one time she will have been batgirl. But those days are long gone. Married to the former Batman Dick Grayson. I liked when Grayson was Batman so I’m keeping that. However he’s not going to be the current Batman. More on that later. Bette Kane is this world’s current batgirl. But, the name Kane is an alias. She took the last name of the long did that woman. Instead of using her real last name which is of course Wayne. But now she’s not the daughter of the way you’re thinking. Because in this reality or publishing line. Bruce Wayne stories as Batman will be from the 50s. Just not the ones we got in the 50s. But, more on that later right now we need to talk about her parents were Bette Kane’s parents. You see right before Dick Grayson retired as Batman because again 50s 60s 70s current during the 60s and 70s Bruce Wayne felt he was too old to do this anymore so he passed on the mantle of Batman to his ward Dick Grayson. Go through some investigation found out that Batman’s old enemy had hidden his before unknown child that he had with Talia.
And renamed him AlGhul. After all he Ras was the child’s grandfather. However Ras within a matter power struggle to keep the league of assassins alive and save this child named Damian Wayne. And leave him as head of the league. But, as the oldest living male heir of Ras The Sensei. Was creating a hostile takeover therefore Batman and his sidekick Robin had to zoom in and save their mentors son. In a way both of there’s brother. The Robin in this instance is of course Tim Drake. At any rate Grayson is able to save the child unfortunately injuring himself in the process losing his left leg. Bigots a prosthetic but it’s not enough for him to continue as Batman and thus Drake takes over as Batman with Damian Wayne as the new Robin. Nyssa Raatko is also fighting for control of the league. The only people helping Batman and Drake save the child are of course the boys mother Talia al Ghul and Obo. Oh and wanes girlfriend. Cassandra Cain.
However the league is totally destroyed through this infighting and without his leg Batman is not able to help save as many people as he would like. Thus he is only able to save the new Robin and his girlfriend. The rest of the league destroys itself. However later on Nyssa Raatko will come back as well having found the Lazarus pit. So Drake will become Batman ,Grayson will retire Cassandra has still been part to be one of the best assassins by her father and mother. Guess which story is cannon again? Only in this version not too long after Ras’s agents find out where Talia left her son and bring him in and race him with the league. Through the course of time Cassondra and Wayne trained together Ras liking what Kane has done with his daughter. And so they are together. For a while Cassandra Cain becomes the new Flame bird. As Wayne becomes the new Robin. Yet I know the back story with the administrator used onto itself a well. At any rate of eventually Drake retires and Wayne becomes a new Batman. Evan Cassandra have a kid that they name Betty. She has taught everything she needs to know that she so she can become the new Robin. However she decides to instead become batgirl and sometimes works with her father.

However, he works out of blood Haven. And adopts the new surname of Bette Kane. In a weird way because it was the name of the off-again on-again girlfriend of Grayson from the 70s. Before he fell in love with and married Barbara Gordon. And also because it’s a different spelling of her mother’s maiden name. Also her father changed his name to Terrence McGinnis. Thus Grayson could still keep Wayne Manor. He got a job as a VP of a side company for Wayne Tech industry and learned a lot from Lucian Fox. And he passed the knowledge he had onto his daughter. So she can make her own tech. And you can guess what uniform Wayne when he was Batman. Also this version of batgirl also learned a few skills from her grandfather. When visiting Bruce Wayne her grandfather and her grandmother well stepgrandmother Selena Kyle. Talia did not make it out of the league war. And it’ll be mostly Bette doing her job as a computer techie at Wayne Tech. In one of their blood Haven facilities. She learned computer programming from Barbara Gordon and her grandfather. As well as Tim Drake. Her villains will probably be killer moth and other batgirl villains. Though I may move firefly over to this book. Along with her aunt Nyssa Raatko. Whom will be rebuilding the league of assassins. Starting with Merlin. Whom I will probably have as a batgirl: for a bit.
I would probably write this one myself. And having drawn by Darick Robertson. I liked his work on Conan and if I get overwhelmed. As managing editor and writer I can get in the reins as writer to this book.

All right Batman 50s. That’s where I’ll have Bruce Wayne. Burnaby kind of a gritty crime the work type story. Set in the 1950s. But real-world 1950s not Batman comics 1950s. Our at least a Mickey Spillane type Gotham. I’ll probably just give that one to Mike Gell and let him figure it out from there.

On to the birds of prey could you knew this was coming. One it will be led by Oracle. Whom is still Barbara Gordon. Should be in her 50s but her age shouldn’t be a factor since she works mostly behind a computer. Well early 50s late 40s something like that. Black Canary will of course be a member of this team. Whom will be a third generation black Canary her grandmother worked with Batman in the 50s. Her mother who married green arrow no not that man. Instead . Connor Hawke the son of Ollie. Though his step mother is Felicity smoke. And thus our new black Canary is their child. Her and Connor’s daughter. Sandra “Moonday” Lance. Lance had become an alias that the black canaries took up. After their grandmother’s husband detective Lance. So while the first black Canary did have a minor relationship with the first green arrow. She ended up marrying the detective. And Olie went off and married Felicity. After his brief fling with Sandra “Moonday” Hawke. I.e. the new black canaries biological grandmother. As well as being taught by her parents our new black Canary was also taught by Shodo. Emiko Queen is also part of this team as the new red arrow. However they don’t hear much from Oliver Queen because of her being there. Though in this version she’s shadows grand daughter. She wants to have a connection with her grand father but she understands why that is not possible since her birth was not a pleasant experience for him. Yeah I’ve made her the grand child of shado in this version. The eww thing happened to Olie, but it will be handled as respectfully as possible and not build into too much. At any rate her father the second shadow is not responsible for what his mother did her mother will be Stephanie Brown. Whom worked with Batman on a few cases as the spoiler. And met the second shadow there. Whom was trying to repair his own honor from what his mother had done.

But it won’t be ignored either. A horrible thing that shouldn’t happen but did. Needless to say after finding out about this the new black Canary has cut all ties to Shado. And she has never again been used by the birds of prey. But, they don’t blame her daughter for her sick decision. Moving along power girl will be the third member of the team. Well really forced but one of the agents that goes out on the missions. So you have black Canary, red arrow and power girl. And every so once in a while they will be joined by Dula Dent whom is the real-life daughter of two face before he became too Face. She used to call herself the jokers daughter, but now she goes by the name punchline. All have it written by Chuck Dixon. And drawn by Becky Cloonan. Maybe Becky’s MA style will help lighten the mood. Since as you can tell this is gonna be kind of a dark book. A bit of a suicide squad type thing but all the characters are good guys.

Big bear. Probably he’ll also be off of new genesis and working on a street level. Dealing with lower powered criminals within some small area. It might be his job maybe I’ll make him a hero for higher. And when punchline isn’t working with the birds of prey she can team up with him. But it will be more to the month except each character will be made dangerous. A chance to fix a lesser-known characters and some cool and dangerous. Have it written by Geoffrey Johns
    with art by Walter Simonson.

Ben Boxer… Maybe just a working-class guy. Who gets his powers when he is working at a convenience store. On his day off. And he’s just really lazy. Or he’s kind of like,” fine I’ll go save the world…I guess. “Really doesn’t want to be superhero, but ends up doing it anyway. Most of the time when he’s in his Omac costume you still have on his bathrobe and bunny slippers. I’ll probably have this one written by Kevin Smith and drawn by Keith Giffen. So if Smith is really late Giffen can come in and take over.

Current Batman will be a half-and-half book. That the first Is Grayson as Batman and the second half is Damien Wayne as Bat Man. And every once in a while I’ll put out the hundred page Batman family book. That will have both of them in full stories. Flashbacks to when Tim Drake was Batman. Along with a few flame birds stories. But the half-and-half Batman. Will have the Grayson stories written and drawn by Tim Truman . While the Wayne er Terrence McGinnis stories will be by Brian Michael Bendis or Eric Larsen. drawn by Andy Kubert.

Big Barda written by PETER J. TOMASI and art by Greg” Capullo.

  9. Oh Barda would have just left the Furies with her oy Friend Scott and their on Earth. She some times works with Bear and some times on her own as a Bail Bonds woman. Taking down powerful villain’s and to bit street hoods. All While running from the Female Furies and Dark Side.

  10. Didn’t realize that I’d missed posting this one with the last batch for Vol. II…

  11. I started this project with the locations in mind, to try to create a Tangent-universe.

In this scenario, the dimensional bubbles of three previous separate worlds have been connected as an unintended effect of a war between Heaven & Hell (A “War of the Gods”, if you will…)

On our world (“Earth 1”) there are portals to “Bizarro World” – a surreal land of Swords & Sandals, and “The Barren Earth” – a place for dystopian sci-fi stories.
One portal to these alternate dimensions is located in “The Batcave” in North America. The other portal is on a remote island in the South Pacific that has been captured by a militaristic group known as The Blackhawks.

Two mortals from Earth were caught up in the cataclysmic merging of these 3 worlds, and now have a presence and a dimensional alter-ego on all three:
Adventurer and family man Bruce Wayne (known as Batman on Earth 1 and The Barren Earth, and chivalric knight Bat-Might (yes, you read that right) on Bizarro World.
Dinah Lance is Black Canary on Earth 1 and Bizarro World, and inhabits a more feral incarnation of Black Condor on The Barren Earth.
(These two characters provide something of a through-line to allow readers a couple of recognisable heroes in each of these very different Worlds.)

The other characters inhabit these three locales:

EARTH ONE: The Wayne family adopt the Bat-identities; Selena Wayne is Batwoman, Barbara Wayne is Batgirl, and Alfred (aka Automan) is an artificially intelligent lifeform created by Bruce to monitor the delicate dimensional balance between the dimensionally interlocked Worlds. Together with Black Canary, these heroes deal with the strange fallout of the War of the Gods. I’d see these books as fun books of adventure and heroism that stand alone but could easily come together for crossover stories.
On the other side of the planet, The Blackhawks are a military organisation aiming to weaponize the dimensional portal to protect Earth 1 from the weird threats that come from Bizarro World and The Barren Earth. From early studies of the dimensional rift that emerged on the Pacific island they commandeered (and renamed), The Blackhawks have already created the fearsome ‘Warp-Wheel’ (see what I did there?) The Blackhawk books would have a grittier tone befitting the more militaristic subject matter.
Balloon Buster is a surviving victim of the celestial war; Steven Savage is a former priest who lost his faith having seen the savagery of the battle between spiritual beings at first hand. He is now a living portal, able to travel between the dimensional bubbles that link Earth 1, Bizarro World and the Barren Earth. Azrael and Baron Blitzkrieg are the respective ambassadors of Heaven & Hell to Earth 1. This Book would cover the thinly-veiled political machinations of the Higher & Lower powers, and a mortal trapped between them.

BIZARRO WORLD: Ruled by King Bizarro and his Queen Beautiful Dreamer, Bizarro World is under threat from evil Sorceress Babe and medieval warlord Baron Bedlam. Beautiful Dreamer used to have precognitive dreams predicting risks to the land, but this ability was lost in the War of the Gods, and she is struggling with the loss of her powers. Now a cadre of knights have been assembled to be Bizarro World’s first line of defence. Led by Big Sir, the banner of knights includes this world’s version of Black Canary, and Batman (known here as Bat-Might) and his Robin-esque squire Bat-Lash. Completing the group is pugnacious pugilist Ben Boxer. The style of these books can be fantastical stories of magic and chivalry.

THE BARREN EARTH: This futuristic world caught the brunt of the spiritual warfare and – as the name suggests – is sterile and decimated. Society has largely broken down and the whole world feels chaotic & dangerous. Heroes are on the back foot on the Barren Earth, sometimes having to resort to desperate measures. As an act of survival, Dinah Lance has become the more savage hero Black Condor in this desolate landscape, whilst Batman fights alongside Barda – a furious warrior determined to restore order and justice to a society on the edge of ruination. Various factions war amongst themselves to control vital resources and what remains of past technology – siblings Black Bison, Black Hand, and Black Fire fight amongst themselves to control the dominions of their ailing father Black Briarthorn, but they can set aside their squabbles to team up against their family rival Big Bear. If mastermind Baron Winters can end the infighting and bring together these warring factions, the heroes of the Barren World could lose their fight for justice.
These books are dark, almost Elseworld-y in nature featuring heroes at the end of their tether with real risk of losing and dying in their quest for right.
