Super Mates Episode 40: Hammer’s The Mummy / The Thing Meets the Living Mummy!

October 08, 2015

Chris and Cindy dare to comb the tombs of the House of Franklin-Stein, and take a look at 1959’s The Mummy! This Hammer remake stars Christopher Lee in the title role of Kharis, the Mummy who awakens from his eternal sleep to exact revenge on those who would dare desecrate the rest of his princess, namely Peter Cushing!

Then, it’s Clobberin’ Time! The Super Mates review Marvel Two-In-One #95, by David Anthony Kraft and Alan Kupperberg. When his girlfriend Alica is possessed by an ancient Egyptian power, the ever-lovin’, blue-eyed Thing crosses paths with Marvel’s own Living Mummy! Is this comic worthy enough to be paired with the excellent movie above? Well, no, but its fun to talk about!

Super Mates Episode 32: The Starman Chronicles, Part 2

June 03, 2015

Chris and Cindy journey back to Opal City, and beyond, to examine Starman #4-6. Jack Knight settles into his role of Starman, but learns that weirdness follows him wherever he goes. A chance encounter with a magical Hawaiian shirt leads to a confrontation with a gunman…and a resolution no super hero fan saw coming.

Then Jack has a chat with his brother David…who is dead. The two Knight boys bury the hatchet…and re-bury some bodies as their discussion leads to a full-blown Cosmic Rod slobberknocker.

Things settle down a bit, so Jack delves into the Shade’s Journal, for our first of many trips into “Time’s Past”.

Super Mates Episode 27: The Starman Chronicles 1

March 19, 2015

This episode marks the beginning of a new recurring feature: The Starman Chronicles, covering James Robinson’s epic DC series from beginning to end.

Jack Knight is no hero. He’s a collector and dealer in pop culture antiques. His father Ted was Starman, defender of Opal City and member of the Justice Society of America. Now his brother David wears the red and green and protects their city. But when David falls, and Opal succumbs to Starman’s greatest enemy, will Jack be able to rise to meet the destiny forced upon him, or is the city, and his father’s legacy, doomed?

Chris and Cindy begin the series by taking a brief look at all the various versions of Starman who have existed throughout DC’s history. Then they are off to examine Starman (Vol. 2) #0-3, the “Sins of the Father” arc by Robinson, and artists Tony Harris and Wade Von Grawbadger. It’s the “hero legacy” bit done as only DC can, but with a darker twist. What did they think of it? How were they affected by this series? And why did Chris grow a goatee?

Super Mates Episode 25: Super Hero Weddings, Part 2

February 19, 2015

Chris and Cindy continue to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the show by looking at the wedding issues of Marvel and DC’s flagship heroes, Spider-Man and Superman, and you’re invited!

First up is Amazing Spider-Man Annual #21. Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson struggle with doubt in the days leading up to their wedding. But is it more than just cold feet? Will they make it to the altar (or the courthouse steps, at least)? And whose idea was this, anyway? What corporate synergy has brought together, let Mephisto not put asunder!

Then we step back in time…and to Earth-Two in Action Comics #484! Superman is vanquished by the evil Wizard, so a new hero must rise to fill the void! That hero is…Clark Kent?!? How do these events lead to his marriage to Lois Lane?

The first couple of comics get married again, this time in the Post-Crisis DCU, in Superman: The Wedding Album. A media tie-in, a gaggle of scheming creators, and even death couldn’t keep them apart, so the happy day finally arrives! It takes an army of Superman creators past and present to tell the tale of how a nearly 60-year old love triangle finally made it to happily ever after.

What did Chris and Cindy think of these tales? Were they convincing? Did they feel the love? Do these characters even belong together? Listen on!

Super Mates Episode 22: Vintage Super Hero Children’s Books

January 08, 2015

Chris and Cindy visit their bookshelf of the past, and pull out some of their favorite children’s books featuring the World’s Greatest Super Heroes!

First up is 1966’s Batman and Robin: From Alfred To Zowie! Learn the alphabet with the Dynamic Duo, as Chris recites the pulse-pounding text by Ruthanna Thomas, and describes the art by comics veteran Tom Gill! You can practically hear the Neal Hefti theme! Oh wait…you can!

Then it’s off to The Super Dictionary from 1978. This strange DC Comics experiment has some very…interesting illustrations and text used to define some rather innocuous words. You have to see it (or hear about it!) to believe it.

We wrap things up with two beautiful Marvel Books from 1984, each written by David Anthony Kraft, with gorgeous art by Marie Severin and Earl Norem; The Amazing Spider-Man: The Big Top Mystery and Fantastic Four: The Island of Danger!

Download via iTunes.
