I like this episode, but it’s true that Norm and Cliff are written somewhat out of character here. It’s almost like this is the Earth-2 version of the Cheers universe, in which Norm and Cliff are inveterate pranksters, which we have never seen before. It especially seems odd that they would prank Sam, who is their idol and the leader of their group. And Cliff is never this obsequious to Norm.
The scene at Frasier and Lilith’s apartment is great. That set, which we see at least once a season, would have been a nice setting for the Frasier-and-Lilith spinoff in Boston that never happened. I remember there being speculation about such a spinoff in the later seasons of Cheers, before we ultimately got the Frasier-in-Seattle spinoff.
Frasier referring to Norm and Cliff as “my boon companions” always cracks me up.
Yeah, I forgot how much I loved “my boon companions”.
