Happy New Year 2026 — or is it 1991?! The parallel new years 35 years apart is a cool coincidence. Speaking of which, I forgot there was a reference to M.C. Hammer on Cheers. My other favorite show, Seinfeld, also had an M.C. Hammer reference in the early 90s, when Kramer told Jerry, “Come on, it’s the 90s, it’s Hammer time!” I guess they thought the whole decade would be defined by M.C. Hammer.
Cheers had so many episodes that could have served as backdoor pilots for spinoffs that never were — Frasier/Lillith, Woody/Kelly, Cliff and his mom (okay, maybe not that one) — but this episode about Carla and her family had never occurred to me. That’s a great point though, and as you guys mentioned, there were some funny characters in this, and there was more of a heart to this side of the family than we saw in The Tortellis (although to be fair, I’ve only seen the two episodes that had Cheers characters as guests).
I really like this run of cold opens that take place on the street outside the bar. It adds some character and a sense that they’re really at the bar. I’ve never been there, but I remember that picture of you and some of the other FW all-stars there a few years ago. My brother-in-law went there recently. I have a coworker who’s from the Boston area, so I sometimes bring up Cheers at social get-togethers at work.
