In the penultimate episode of this season, I am joined by Harry “Beep Boop” Chute to discuss the 2004 cinematic epic Troy. Is Troy influenced by the Iraq War? What role does, or should, sex play in an historic retelling? How much screentime is necessary to make a romantic couple believable? Can we become emotionally invested in Patroclus/Achilles if there is #nohomo? Listen and find out.

I did actually see Troy when it first came out in theaters, but haven’t watched it since. The main thing that I remember from the movie is its depiction of Greek hero as celebrity, which you touched on in your discussion. I think it is an interesting way to “modernize” the story, while still keeping it set in the past.
I’ve thought of showing Troy to my daughter, but I think the film’s weak portrayal of the Patroclus/Achille relationship would be a non-starter for her.
Thanks for another incredible episode. I’m looking forward to the final episode (but not because it’s the last one).
