But….no picture of the back-cover by Ross Andru?!?
Was counting the moments and seconds until that 3 page feature was considered. Earth-2 Aquaman 4ever Shag! Like it love it learn from it ! 🙂
Would love it if you guys could bring Gerry Conway and Roy Thomas back to talk about the JSA and All-Star, the Comic and the Squadron.
Given that this is after the split between the National Comics and All-American Comics lines, the regular JSA roll call would after about 1943 or 44, or so, would be comprised purely of heroes of the All-American stable until its disbanding in 1951. The owners did eventually patch up their differences, which leads me to wonder if the use of Superman and Batman was a sort of peace offering to the Gaines family. Oh, well, I’m glad that Superman was able to fill Johnny Thunder’s shoes! “Say, you’d think I could take the day off now and again.”
Great coverage of a great digest! I bought this one off the stands, and I didn’t need a testimonial from Bats and Supes to make that decision. I’d known the JSA were awesome since at least the JLA two-parter on the death of Mr. Terrific the year before. I will admit that this filled in a lot of gaps. It also introduced me to the Gardner Fox “pair off, then reteam” story outline.
Shagg, it may be true that DC tried for years to say that there was no Earth-2 Aquaman, but with different origins (plus the anachronistic Nazi-punching), it never made any sense. Roy Thomas just picked up the obvious answer the rest of DC had been ignoring. It’s a good thing they never put so much effort into illogical, unnecessary continuity gaffes ever again…I mean, except for Power Girl…and Legion, of course…oh, and how could I forget Hawkman? You know what? I don’t want to talk about it anymore.
A couple weeks ago, I was digging through a short box in the EntropyCave (also known as my garage—a well-named lair if there ever was one) and ran across the Dr. Fate First Issue Special. I think I picked it up as a back issue decades ago, remembering the story from this digest. I took it out and read it again so I could remember what all the fuss was about on Fire & Water. That was another good comic book decision — two, if you count the original purchase!

Has commenting on these gallery posts become a new thing that nobody told me about?
Sometimes, a host neglects to check off the commenting capacity of gallery posts. It’s not a thing, it can just happen.
Yeah, not a thing, Edo, just a mistake on our part. Gord, Netministrator, and I followed Russell like sheep.
A DisneyWorld cast member once told me that he and his friends would put on their street clothes and just line up in the middle of the park sometimes to see if people would line up behind them, waiting to see something cool. It always worked.
Love that Dr Fate story and this was a really fun episode guys.
