Rob,
This was an AMAZING get of an interview. I’m not even sure that I know who Barrie Chase was when I tuned in, but of course, I’ve been watching her all of her life. What an incredibly self-aware, warm and candid Actor. You should very seriously donate a copy of this interview to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, or some similar film heritage organization for posterity. An incredible opportunity for you to know and chat with this very living legend of Hollywood. Congratulations on this interview.
Thanks for listening and the kind words, Gord. Barrie has led an amazing life and her recall about stuff 60, 70 years ago was amazing.
Wow… talk about burying the lead!
“Yeah… I once went out with somebody who gave me the idea and means to progress my career to the next level…”
15 Minutes Later…
“Yeah… that was when I dated Stanley Kubrick.”
Terrific show, Rob. You’re a great interviewer, because you give Barrie plenty of breathing space in which to share her amazing stories from a long and incredible career. Thank you both for a highly informative and engaging show.
Thanks for listening Chris! Yeah, Barrie kept flooring me with her oh-so-casual references to people, and it would take me a few seconds to contextualize what she was saying and I’d be thinking, “Wait, did she just mention STEVE MCQUEEN?”
Fantastic episode Rob. Miss Chase was a delight, and her stories were incredibly captivating. I really felt like I got a feel for how Hollywood worked back then. Wonderful stuff!
Thanks Chris! Yeah I could have talked to her all day, but I figured two hours of her time was generous enough,
Rob, congratulations on getting such a wonderful guest, and what a charming lady Barrie Chase is. Hearing her story first hand was a real treat, and a privilege.
I was just looking online to see if I could find her dancing with Hermes Pan – what a name! – and came across a charming clip of her bantering and dancing with Fred Astaire to something called Boom Boom at the Hollywood Palace. Just delightful.
Loved the anecdote about wanting to yell at Gene Kelly’s widow Patricia for her verbal slight to Astaire… oh, I wish Miss Chase hadn’t restrained herself. We actually saw Ms Ward Kelly’s show in Edinburgh in, I think, 2018, it was fascinating; as Miss Chase says, you really don’t have to choose.
That Flight of the Phoenix story was amazing, it shows so much character on Miss Chase‘s part. When she was telling us about how the director was worried that the cast was all male, I thought it meant he wanted a female identification figure… then we find out he just wants more totty for the men to look at. Hollywood, bah.
Now Rob, how will you top this episode?
Martin, ha! This month’s episode was definitely unique. I’m glad we did talk (briefly) about Ms. Chase’s final film, FLIGHT OF THE PHEONIX, that way we weren’t busting the show’s format TOO much. Thanks for listening!
