Super Mates Episode 33: Lynda Carter in Wonder Woman ‘77

June 20, 2015

Chris and Cindy hop in their Invisible Plane and head back to the disco era to check out the 2nd season opening tele-film for the 70s Wonder Woman TV series, retitled The New Adventures of Wonder Woman! Lynda Carter must leave Paradise Island once more, this time to help Lyle Wagonner’s Steve Trevor, Jr. stop a group of terrorists! What did the Super Mates think of the transition to the “modern” era? Does this episode hold up to the fabled World War II-centric first season? Only one way to know for sure!

Then it’s off to the comic rack, for DC’s Brand-New Wonder Woman ’77 comic, based on this version of the television series! Wonder Woman goes clubbin’ and runs afowl (get it) of the Silver Swan! Then in the second story, Diana Prince wakes up in a world that is not her own. If she’s not Wonder Woman, who is? Hmmm, I don’t know…maybe Cathy Lee Crosby?!?

Super Mates Episode 32: The Starman Chronicles, Part 2

June 03, 2015

Chris and Cindy journey back to Opal City, and beyond, to examine Starman #4-6. Jack Knight settles into his role of Starman, but learns that weirdness follows him wherever he goes. A chance encounter with a magical Hawaiian shirt leads to a confrontation with a gunman…and a resolution no super hero fan saw coming.

Then Jack has a chat with his brother David…who is dead. The two Knight boys bury the hatchet…and re-bury some bodies as their discussion leads to a full-blown Cosmic Rod slobberknocker.

Things settle down a bit, so Jack delves into the Shade’s Journal, for our first of many trips into “Time’s Past”.

Super Mates Episode 29: Cathy Lee Crosby Wonder Woman pilot with Gene Hendricks!

April 23, 2015

One of the hardest working men in podcasting, Gene Hendricks (The Hammer Podcasts, The Quantum Cast, Anime Freaks) drops by to join Chris and Cindy in discussing the infamous 1974 Wonder Woman TV pilot movie starring Cathy Lee Crosby as a very blonde, very non-traditional, not-quite-Amazon Princess!

Decked out in much different costume, she matches wits with Ricardo Montalban (in a very familiar costume for Fantasy Island fans), an international thief who has stolen some top-secret code books! It’s got tricked out bracelets, non-visible invisible planes, and some of the worst pick-up lines in cinema history! What did Gene think of it? What did Chris and Cindy think of it? Where’s Tattoo when you need him?

April 08, 2015

Favorite (and only) son Andrew Franklin rejoins his parents, Chris and Cindy to take a look at two, count ‘em, TWO deaths of Superman! No not those two from the comics, two from the heralded DCAU, or the Timmverse, if you prefer!

First up, from Superman: The Animated Series comes “The Late Mr. Kent”. On a mission to save an innocent man on death row, Clark Kent is seemingly killed! How can the still breathing Man of Steel resurrect his alter-ego, and manage to save the innocent man in his final minutes?

Then, it’s time for a trip to the “Hereafter”. This Justice League animated episode features the Superman Revenge Squad finally breaking even…when Toyman kills the Last Son of Krypton. The Earth and the League mourn the loss of their greatest hero, but 30, 000 years in the future, on a world with a red sun, the Man of Tomorrow rises. Super Mates Episode 27: The Starman Chronicles 1

March 19, 2015

This episode marks the beginning of a new recurring feature: The Starman Chronicles, covering James Robinson’s epic DC series from beginning to end.

Jack Knight is no hero. He’s a collector and dealer in pop culture antiques. His father Ted was Starman, defender of Opal City and member of the Justice Society of America. Now his brother David wears the red and green and protects their city. But when David falls, and Opal succumbs to Starman’s greatest enemy, will Jack be able to rise to meet the destiny forced upon him, or is the city, and his father’s legacy, doomed?

Chris and Cindy begin the series by taking a brief look at all the various versions of Starman who have existed throughout DC’s history. Then they are off to examine Starman (Vol. 2) #0-3, the “Sins of the Father” arc by Robinson, and artists Tony Harris and Wade Von Grawbadger. It’s the “hero legacy” bit done as only DC can, but with a darker twist. What did they think of it? How were they affected by this series? And why did Chris grow a goatee?

February 05, 2015

Chris and Cindy celebrate the first anniversary of Super Mates, and Valentine’s Day with a look at famous Super Hero weddings! Hear them discuss the legendary nuptials of some of the world’s greatest super heroes!

First off, it’s the wedding of Aquaman and Mera in Aquaman (vol. 1) #18! Aquaman becomes the king of Atlantis, but he must choose a queen! Despite his love for Mera, he must marry an Atlantean! Will the two love birds work it out, or will Arthur feel the fury of a Sea Queen scorned?!?

It’s wall to wall action in Fantastic Four (vol. 1) Annual #3, 1965! Dr. Doom sets out to disrupt the happy day of Mr. Fantastic and the Invisible Girl! He sends an army of villains to the Baxter Building, but luckily the entire Marvel Universe of heroes shows up to stop them! Oh, and there is a wedding at the end. Lee and Kirby at their whackiest!

Then it’s a much quieter event in Tales of the Teen Titans #50. You are invited to the wedding of Donna (Wonder Girl) Troy and Terry Long. Marv Wolfman and George Perez present a wedding with no flights, no tights but plenty of nice character moments.
