Great podcast episode. From watching the series along with your podcast, I’m realizing that the second half of Season 4 is really strong. Dark Imaginings, Fear is My Co-Pilot, and Diane Chambers Day are three of my favorites. A lot of classic moments in this episode, including both the opera scene and the scene of the gang humming the Magnificent Seven theme (which like you I first saw on the 200th episode clip show). In fact I read somewhere that Diane Chambers Day was some of the cast’s favorite episode of the entire series.
I have now had The Magnificent Seven theme running through my head all day. Time to get out that Blu-Ray…
Well, with the 6 regular cast members plus Frazier, that’s 7. So my thought was Diane could also be upset at being left out of *this* 7 specifically. But the writers didn’t put it into the dialog, and may be too awkward to fit into the show. But thematically, it works so I’m keeping it in my head canon.
Whenever they need someone to handle the bar while the regulars are elsewhere, the answer is always “Call Bob.” So when they got to Sam’s apartment, he called Bob to close up. Nuff said.
The scene at the end is such gold. Diane admitting her attraction to Sam, Sam coming clean the night was Frazier’s doing, Diane being even more attracted, Sam’s relief, and check Diane’s smile in that moment. I think that’s more a “Shelley smile” than a “Diane smile”, it’s so happy and warm, I love it!
