Great Mash episode and a great Mashcast episode. This is one of my favorites from season 2 and, as you mentioned, is still relevant in today’s political climate.
The only part that makes me cringe a little is Henry’s punishment. He decides that the proper way to punish two surgeons who are trying to get much needed equipment for the outfit is to have them work in the line of fire where the chances of getting killed are much greater. For a character who in a later episode says that sending people to the front is just not his style, he sent Hawkeye and Trapper into the fighting rather casually.
And if you need a co-host for season 3 and beyond, this first generation fan will be glad to oblige.
Thanks for another enjoyable episode of MASHCast about another great episode of MASH. You actually played my favorite line from this episode in your stinger, “just write in pizza where it says machine gun.” The matter-of-fact delivery of those lines is perfect. It really drives home how common sense can so easily be sacrificed in an effort to maintain and follow procedure.
Your discussion of the opening morning-after scene also reminds me of how I like to use MASH to teach my daughter about different issues she might face later on in life, like the potential dangers of over-consuming alcohol. I’ll let you know how well that works in a few years, after she enters high school. Seriously though, watching MASH as a family does give my wife and I a way to broach some otherwise tricky topics with our daughter.
Great show! Season 2 is getting good. Many teachable moments. My only issue is you brought on co-host who admitted MASH was NOT his favorite show of all time. How dare he. Ha ha. I will update my application for a season 3 guest.
This was a great episode. I like the reversal for Hawkeye and Trapper. They’re used to being clowns and acting a little crazy. But here, they go up against the truly insane inner workings of the military, and find themselves being the voice of reason completely unheard.
Great job, MASHochists!
